Motor Racing Network in Daytona: Motor Racing Network kicked off its 2013 schedule with 25 hours of coverage from last month's Rolex 24 at Daytona. For February, MRN has slated 33 hours of exclusive radio and streaming content from Budweiser Speedweeks to launch the 2013 NASCAR season. Saturday's Sprint Unlimited at Daytona (formerly the Budweiser Shootout) opens a stretch of nine races in as many days for Motor Racing Network as it heads into its 44th year of broadcasting. That'll culminate with the 55th running of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 24.
In addition to servicing its traditional network of radio affiliates, MRN will provide a number of webcasts heard only at MotorRacingNetwork.com including the inaugural UNOH Battle At The Beach on Feb. 18-19; and coverage of Sprint Cup Series practice sessions Feb. 15, 20 and 23.
"This is an ambitious schedule and one that'll provide complete coverage of Budweiser Speedweeks for our loyal listeners and now, those who regularly visit our website," said MRN President and Executive Producer David Hyatt. "If it happens at Daytona International Speedway over the next couple weeks, you'll hear about it on Motor Racing Network."
The first race of Speedweeks 2013 will be Saturday night's Sprint Unlimited at Daytona, featuring Cup Series pole winners from last season in a non-points special event. Air time is 7:00om/et with Joe Moore and Jeff Striegle anchoring the broadcast. Kyle Busch is the defending race winner.
Start-to-finish coverage of Daytona 500 Qualifying will follow on Sunday at 1:00pm/et, when the front row is set for the season-opening Sprint Cup Series race. Carl Edwards is bidding to become the first driver to win back-to-back Daytona 500 poles since Ken Schrader put three in a row together from 1988-1990.
A full week of pre-"500" programming opens Monday, Feb. 18, with a one-hour special "Daytona 500: Turning of the Tide," featuring memorable moments and game-changing drama from the 54-year history of "The Great American Race."
Two special editions of "NASCAR Live" with Eli Gold will air Feb. 19 and 21. Thursday's program will include a recap of the Budweiser Duel at Daytona qualifying races. Scheduled guests are drivers Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
The ninth season of "NASCAR Performance Live" gets rolling Feb. 20 featuring crew chief Paul Wolfe from Penske Racing, who helped guide Brad Keselowski to the 2012 Sprint Cup Series championship.
MRN streaming content will include both nights of the Battle At The Beach, a showcase for three of NASCAR's top regional series: the Whelen All-American Series for Late Models, the Whelen Modified Tour and the K&N Pro Series. Coverage will begin at 7 p.m. on both Feb. 18 and 19.
The NextEra Energy Resources 250, opening race of the 2013 Camping World Truck Series, will air Friday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. James Buescher is back to defend his 2012 championship. The following day, MRN will broadcast the DRIVE-4-C.O.P.D. 300 Nationwide Series opener at 1 p.m.
Budweiser Speedweeks concludes with complete coverage of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 24. Matt Kenseth is the defending race winner, with Keselowski opening his bid for a second consecutive Cup Series championship. All told in 2013, MRN is broadcasting 88 live events from 34 different venues spread across NASCAR's three top national series, as well as exclusive radio coverage of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.

Notes & Facts Daytona International Speedway:
Groundbreaking for Daytona International Speedway was Nov. 25, 1957. The soil underneath the banked corners was dug from the infield of the track and the hole filled with water. It is now known as Lake Lloyd.
The first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona was a 100-mile qualifying race for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 20, 1959.
Richard Petty won his 200th career race on July 4, 1984 at Daytona.
Lights were installed in the spring of 1998. However, the July race was delayed until October that year due to thick smoke from wildfires. The second Daytona race has been held under the lights ever since.
The track underwent a repave in 2010.
There have been 131 NASCAR Sprint Cup races since the track hosted its first race in 1959: 54 have been 500 miles, 50 were 400 miles and four 250 miles. There were also 23 qualifier races that were point races.
Fireball Roberts won the inaugural pole at Daytona.
Bob Welborn won the first race at Daytona, the 100-mile qualifying race for the Daytona 500.
Lee Petty won the inaugural Daytona 500 on Feb. 22, 1959; he led 38 laps and won by 2 feet.
Fireball Roberts won the first 400-mile race at Daytona, the 1963 Firecracker 400.
55 drivers have posted poles at Daytona.
Cale Yarborough leads all drivers with 12 poles at Daytona.
Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin lead all active drivers with three poles at Daytona.
56 drivers have won at Daytona.
Richard Petty leads all drivers in victories at Daytona with 10.
Jeff Gordon has six victories at Daytona, more than any other active driver.
The Wood Brothers have won 15 races at Daytona, more than any other car owner.
17 full-length races at Daytona have been won from the pole; the last to do it was Kevin Harvick in the 2011 Coke Zero 400.
A driver has swept both races at Daytona only four times, most recently by Bobby Allison in 1982.(NASCAR)(2-20-2013)
No Cup Champs as winner of Daytona 500 in a while: If #2-Brad Keselowski wins the Daytona 500 on Sunday, he'll be the first defending Cup champion in 13 years to accomplish the feat. The last man to do it was Dale Jarrett in 2000, three months after winning the 1999 title.(ESPN)(2-21-2013)

Weather on Sunday could be a concern for the Daytona 500 [as of 2:00pm/et]: The weather forecast for Sunday, Feb. 24th looks iffy. We may get a chance to see the Air Titan track drying system in operation and see if it works well, more info on my Track Drying System page.
The current radar has some cells to the west, but there looks like a good chance the race will get in. here are a couple of forecasts for Sunday:
Weather.com forecast for today: Mixed clouds and sun with scattered thunderstorms. High 73F. Winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50% and for Sunday night: Scattered thunderstorms during the evening. Cloudy skies after midnight. Low 61F. Winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40%.
The National Weather Service forecast for today: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. West northwest wind around 10 mph becoming north northeast. Chance of precipitation is 50%. And for Sunday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 62. East northeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
The weather for Monday and Tuesday look very similar to Sunday.
Last year, rain forced the Daytona 500 to be postponed for the first time in its 54-year history and ran Monday night. One-Hundred laps need to be run [of 200, 1/2 distance] to be official. See a few weather links on my Daytona Race Info page.(2-24-2013)
Engine Rule at Daytona: the engine rule is a little different at Daytona 500 [just like qualifying] then the other 35 races, teams must run the same engine from Saturday's first practice session through the Budweiser Duel 150 mile qualifying races. If a team makes a change before the Duel, then it must start at the rear of the Duel 150 field. After the Duel 150 races, teams can make an engine change before the Happy Hour practice session. After that, if an engine change is made, the driver will start at the rear of the Daytona 500.
Pit Stall Selections: The selections of pit stalls for the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway have been made.
Pole sitter #10-Patrick chose pit stall 1 [as do most pole sitters].
Outside pole sitter #24-Gordon took pit stall 21, the first pitstall with an opening in front of it.

The fans chose a required four-tire pit stop at the end of the 30 lap segment 1. On Lap 15, #14-Stewart, was running 2nd, came down to get in front of #9-Ambrose, sending #9 up the track a bit and the #14 hitting the apron, but both drove on at speed. #11-Hamlin got into the #48-Johnson car, send both into the outside wall, collecting #55-Martin, #78-Busch, #18-Busch, #24-Gordon and #56-Truex Jr. Only Truex Jr. was able to stay in the race.

NASCAR Green-White-Checkered Race Procedure: NASCAR allows a maximum of three restart attempts prior to the White Flag under NASCAR's Green-White-Checkered flag finish. If the leader has taken the White Flag and the caution flag is displayed, the field is frozen and the race will not be restarted. Previously, there was only one restart attempt. The procedure applies to all three national series. See rule and notes on the Green-White-Checker rule page.
Wave-around rule: The wave-around rule dictates that cars under penalty at the time of the caution are ineligible for the wave around.

Danica Patrick Becomes First Female Pole Winner In NASCAR Sprint Cup History: #10-Danica Patrick made NASCAR history today during Coors Light Pole qualifying for the Daytona 500, becoming the first female driver to win a pole at NASCAR's top level the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. During qualifying for the sport's marquee event, Patrick turned a lap of 196.434 mph (45.817 seconds), giving her the first starting position for next Sunday's Daytona 500. It was the fastest Daytona 500 pole-winning speed since 1990. Patrick shattered the previous record for top starting spot by a female NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver. Janet Guthrie previously held the mark, twice starting ninth in 1977. She started ninth at Talladega Superspeedway on Aug. 7, 1977 and at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 28, 1977. The previous best starting position for a female in the Daytona 500 was 18th by Janet Guthrie in 1980.
This is Patrick's second NASCAR pole, also winning the Coors Light Pole for the season-opening NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona last season. The only other female to win a NASCAR national series pole was Shawna Robinson in a NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1994. Already a NASCAR record holder, Patrick set the mark of best finish by a female driver in NASCAR national series history when she finished fourth in a NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2011. She finished 10th in the final 2012 NASCAR Nationwide points standings, the top finish by a female in NASCAR national series history. Patrick, who is running for the 2013 Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award, is the first rookie to win the Daytona 500 pole since Jimmie Johnson in 2002.(NASCAR)(2-17-2013)

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph
HOW TO QUALIFY FOR THE 2013 DAYTONA 500
Step 1) Positions 1-2: set by first round qualifying, the fastest two drivers.
Step 2) Positions 3-32: set by the results of the Budweiser Duel 150, 32 drivers, not already in by step 1. Drivers who finish in the top 15 in their respective races earn spots in the Daytona 500 and the 16th-place driver gets in as long as one of the top-15 drivers already occupies one of the two front row spots.
Step 3) Positions 33-36: the fastest four drivers from qualifying not in already from steps 1 and 2.
Step 4) Positions 37-42: the highest drivers in the previous season's OWNERS points standing not already in the race.
Step 5) Postion 43: to a former Sprint Cup Champion not already in by the criteria set in steps 1 thru 4. If there is no former champ not in, the next driver whose team in the highest in the previous OWNERS points standings
The Daytona 500 has a different qualifying format: Only the two fastest drivers secure starting spots for the Daytona 500 in qualifying on Sunday, February 17th. Qualifying speeds will be used to set the lineups for Thursday's Budweiser Duel 150-mile qualifying races. Odd numbers -- first, third, fifth and so on -- go in the first race, even numbers in the second. Results from the Budweiser Duel will set positions 3 through 32 for the Daytona 500. The next four spots in the Daytona 500 field will go to the drivers with the four fastest qualifying speeds who have not yet made the field. The final six spots go to provisional starters based on last season's car owner points standings. The 43rd and final spot goes to a past Sprint Cup Series champion, if needed. If not used then the spot goes to the the next driver whose team in the highest in the previous owners points standings. The pole sitting driving is assured of starting on the pole in the Daytona 500 and the second-fastest driver is assured of starting on the outside of the front row for the Daytona 500. The third-fastest, however, could start the Daytona 500 as far back as 33rd depending on how they finish in the Budweiser Duel.
How To Qualify For The Daytona 500 - 2013: Qualifying for the Daytona 500 is unlike any other auto racing qualifying procedure. Drivers have multiple opportunities to qualify for the season-opening race, as opposed to the usual format of one qualifying session per event. The first chance comes via Daytona 500 Coors Light Pole Qualifying, which will be held Sunday, Feb. 17 on FOX. The other chance is the Duel at Daytona, two 150-mile qualifying races held on Thursday, Feb. 21 on SPEED. Below is a breakdown of the Daytona 500 qualifying procedure:
Daytona 500 Coors Light Pole Qualifying
" Each team may run two consecutive laps with the fast lap setting the qualifying time. The two fastest qualifiers earn starting positions one and two and are the only guaranteed positions, filling the front row for the Daytona 500 and pole positions for the two qualifying races.
" The Duel at Daytona, two 150-mile qualifying races, will determine starting positions for the Daytona 500 beyond the front row. In the event of cancellation, the field will be set according to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rule Book.
Duel at Daytona
" Those cars earning odd-numbered positions from qualifying will be assigned to the first Duel race. Those cars earning even-numbered positions from qualifying will compete in the second race.
" The starting positions for each Duel race will also be based on qualifying times.
Daytona 500 Lineup
" The two fastest qualifiers set starting positions one and two.
" The highest 15 finishers in each Duel race excluding the already locked-in front row will earn a spot in the Daytona 500, and fill positions 3-32.
" Based on their finishing position in the first Duel race, the top 15 will line up on the inside row (odd-number starting positions).
" Based on their finishing position in the second Duel race, the top 15 will line up on the outside row (even-number starting positions).
" Positions 33-36 will go to the four fastest cars from qualifying that have not already earned a spot.
" Position 37-42 will be provisional positions, and go to the highest six cars in 2012 owner points that have not already qualified via the Duel or Coors Light Pole qualifying.
" The 43rd starting position will be assigned to any car owner who has the most recent eligible past NASCAR Sprint Cup champion who did not make the field by any other method, providing the driver had competed in the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. If the 43rd position remains unused it will be assigned to the next highest car in 2012 owner points not already locked into the field.(NASCAR)(2-16-2013)
Qualifying sets only Daytona 500 front row: Sunday's Daytona 500 Coors Light Pole qualifying is unique in that only the top two positions will be guaranteed. Remaining qualifiers are seeded by qualifying speed into Thursday's Budweiser Duel, two 150-mile races from which the majority of the final starting grid for the Daytona 500 is set. The front-row qualifiers and the highest 15 finishers in each Duel excluding the front row from qualifying will earn a spot in the Daytona 500. The next four fastest Coors Light Pole qualifiers will make up positions 33-36. Six provisional starting positions (37 through 42) will be awarded to the highest eligible car owners in final 2012 standings not otherwise qualified for the race. The 43rd position will be filled by the most recent past champion participating in a 2012 event. Should no past champion be eligible, the final position goes to the next highest owner in 2012 points. The most recent Daytona 500 pole winner to win the race was Dale Jarrett in 2000, one of two drivers (Bill Elliott is the other) to sweep The Sprint Unlimited, pole and race in the same season.(NASCAR)(2-17-2013)

#10-Danica Patrick will pilot chassis No. 10-758, a brand new chassis for the #10 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet Stewart-Haas Racing team.
#14-Tony Stewart: Chassis No. 14-762 is a brand-new racecar that has never turned a wheel on the racetrack, but it has been wind-tunnel tested numerous times.
#16-Greg Biffle: and the Matt Puccia led #16 3M Ford Fusion team will bring Primary Chassis RK-781 to Daytona which hit the track for the first time a year ago in the Daytona 500 and earned a third-place finish. Robbie Reiser has nicknamed RK-781 "Jake" after Puccia's pet cat.
#17-Ricky Stenhouse Jr.: Chassis RK-830 is a brand new chassis for the Rookie of the Year contender. After the Daytona test in January, the #17 team went to work to build a brand new car.
#22-Joey Logano: and the #22 Pennzoil/Shell Ford team will race chassis 653 in the Daytona 500, a brand new chassis for 2013. The backup chassis is 648 a brand new chassis for 2013.
#27-Paul Menard will pilot chassis No. 409 for both the Budweiser Duel and Daytona 500. This #27 PEAK/Menards Chevrolet SS is a new addition to the Richard Childress Racing stable this season. Menard has 11 starts at Daytona International Speedway. His best start of first came in July 2008 and his best finish of sixth came in last year's Daytona 500. The Wisconsin native has completed 1,933 of 1,948 laps attempted at the 2.5-mile superspeedway, leading 37 of them.
#29-Kevin Harvick: will pilot Chassis No.407 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable in both the Budweiser Duel and Daytona 500. New to the fleet, this Budweiser Chevrolet SS will run its first competitive laps at the 2.5-mile superspeedway during Budweiser Speedweeks.
#31-Jeff Burton will race chassis No. 296 in the second Budweiser Duel and Daytona 500. This Caterpillar chassis was utilized last season in the Daytona 500 by Burton and saw action at multiple restrictor-plate events during the 2010 and 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series seasons with driver Clint Bowyer. Burton's has 38 starts at Daytona International Speedway with one win (July 2000), nine top-five and 11 top-10 finishes. Burton also scored the pole position for the 2006 Daytona 500 and has led 145 laps at the historic 2.5-mile superspeedway. Pon CAT, Ring Power CAT and Toromont CAT will be featured on the deck lid of the #31 Caterpillar Chevrolet this weekend in the Daytona 500.
#39-Ryan Newman Chassis No. 39-664, which has two previous starts in restrictor-plate races, both coming during the 2011 season. Its first start came at Daytona in July 2011. Newman had a strong racecar, evidenced by his leading four times for a race-high 25 laps. But, in the end, he was relegated to a 23rd-place finish thanks to being shuffled out of the lead on the race's final restart and being collected in a last-lap accident. After extensive body work, the chassis returned to action at Talladega in October. Once again, his racecar was strong, but he was the victim of the two-car draft just before the race's halfway point. Newman was spun, which caused major front-end damage. The severe spin in the grass tore off Newman's front-bumper assembly and left him with a heavily damaged racecar and a 38th-place finish. Last season, Chassis No. 39-664 served as a backup car at Daytona and Talladega. Since then, the car's body has been updated for 2013, and it was wind-tunnel tested in January in preparation for the Daytona 500.
#48-Jimmie Johnson: Chassis No. 771 serves as the primary for Johnson in the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, a brand new chassis. Chassis No. 618 serves as the backup and finished 14th in last years Sprint Unlimited event and 4th in the 2011 event..
#55-Mark Martin: will drive MWR chassis 753 in the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway.
#88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.: For the Feb. 24 Daytona 500, crew chief Steve Letarte has selected Chassis No. 88-773. This is a new chassis that has not been raced and will feature the blue National Guard scheme.
#99-Carl Edwards the #99 Fastenal team will be using RK-835 for the Daytona 500. The car debuted this year as the primary for last weekend's Sprint Unlimited, when a wreck in practice forced the team to roll out a backup car and send 835 back to RFR for repairs. The #99 Fastenal Ford Fusion will continue its back to back sponsorship in Daytona where suppliers Milwaukee, GearWrench, Weiler and Rubbermaid will debut on the hood, TV panel, deck lid and B-post.
