  • Group qualifying debuts at Sonoma: Single-car qualifying on road courses will be shelved this week and later this summer at The Glen. Instead, cars will be assigned to one of five or six groups based on practice speeds, slowest to fastest. Within those groups, cars will be separated fastest to slowest and released at intervals. Each group will have a window in which cars can complete their qualifying - each likely receiving three laps at full speed. A car's fastest lap will count and the field will be set based upon overall qualifying speeds. The process has been used previously for NASCAR Nationwide Series road course qualifications.(NASCAR)(6-21-2013)

  • Little success for Road Course "Ringers": Road racing specialists - often dubbed "ringers" - fit the category of many being called; few if any answering. Mark Donohue was the last such competitor to score a NASCAR premier series road race victory on Jan. 21, 1973 at Riverside International Raceway. Canadian Ron Fellows heads the list of such drivers vying for a spot in Sunday's race. Fellows, who'll drive Joe Falk's #33 Chevy, has made 23 NASCAR Sprint Cup starts with a pair of second-place finishes at Watkins Glen his best performances. With six NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck victories, Fellows could become the 24th to sweep all three national series - and first to do it with road race wins.(NASCAR)(6-21-2013)

  • New NASCAR Sprint Cup Road-Course Qualifying Procedure Announced: NASCAR announced that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will implement the group-based road course qualifying procedure used in NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Touring Series competition during its road-course events at Sonoma Raceway and Watkins Glen International. Under the new procedure, cars will qualify in groups instead of the traditional single-car qualifying runs held on oval race tracks. "The change will add an exciting element to road-course qualifying," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. "Fans will be treated to new strategy and increased competition with several cars on track at once."
The new qualifying rules for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at road courses are as follows:
    · Cars attempting to qualify will be divided into groups. The number of groups, and amount of cars in each, will depend on the number of cars that practice for the event.
    · Group assignments will be based on final practice times.
    · Each qualifying group will be on-track for a set period of time, determined by the Series Director.
    · A car's best lap time during the group session will be the qualifying lap time of record.
    · A group's time begins when the first car receives the green flag at the start/finish line.
"This is going to be a terrific new format for our NASCAR weekend," said Steve Page, president and general manager of Sonoma Raceway. "It will intensify the action, with multiple cars on the track at the same time. It's a very positive development for our fans."
"The new format of qualifying at Watkins Glen International enhances the fan experience which is our top priority," said Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen. "Qualifying on Saturday for our Cheez-ItTM 355 at The Glen is even more of a not-to-be missed aspect of a weekend of high-quality racing."
The new format will debut with the Toyota Save-Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on June 23 and will return at Watkins Glen for the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen on August 11.(NASCAR)(4-22-2013)

  • How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

Some Chassis Selections and Notes by Teams for this race

  • Chassis selections for Sonoma: see the list of many teams and what chassis were selected by the team to run at Sonoma:
MISSING? why are some teams missing? some teams do not report what chassis in the race previews, press releases or websites.
#1-Jamie McMurray: chassis not reported on race preview.
#2-Brad Keselowski: Primary Chassis: PRS-837. Last Raced - Martinsville (finished sixth). Backup Chassis: PRS-834. Last Raced: Backup at several races (not raced)
#5-Kasey Kahne: Crew chief Kenny Francis has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 5-802 for the Sonoma race. This is a new chassis, but Kahne tested it at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, S.C., earlier this month.
#7-Justin Marks chassis not reported on race preview.
#9-Marcos Ambrose: The No. 9 team prepared chassis No. 761 for Sonoma. The team tested this chassis at Sonoma in May.
#10-Danica Patrick: Chassis No. 10-759 is a new car that has not been used previously.
#13-Casey Mears: Chassis 660 gets the nod for primary duties at Sonoma. The road-course chassis joined the Germain Racing ranks in 2012 and is making its second appearance at Sonoma for the team.
#14-Tony Stewart: Chassis No. 14-731: This car debuted in impressive fashion last June at Sonoma as Stewart took Chassis No. 14-731 from its 24th-place starting spot and rallied it to a strong second-place finish. Its second and final start of 2012 came at Watkins Glen in August. It qualified ninth and Stewart wheeled it up to second, but on lap 71, he spun off the final corner of the 2.45-mile, 11-turn road course and backed into the Armco barrier lining the inside of pit road, sustaining heavy damage. Several trips to the pits allowed the crew the opportunity to repair the car enough to finish the race, and that's just what Stewart did, rallying from 29th on lap 74 to finish 19th when the checkered flag dropped after lap 90. With 2013 Chevrolet SS bodywork covering it, Chassis No. 14-731 returns to site of its debut race when it competes in this weekend's Toyota/SaveMart 350k.
#15-Clint Bowyer: chassis not reported on race preview.
#16-Greg Biffle: RK-764 - Last ran Watkins Glen - finished 6th. Chassis RK-764 is the same car that Biffle drove a seventh-place finish a year ago at Sonoma.
#17-Ricky Stenhouse Jr.: Primary Chassis: RK-816 - last raced at Watkins Glen by the No. 99 - finished 14th. Backup Chassis: RK- 758 - back-up chassis for road course races in 2012.
#18-Kyle Busch: chassis not reported on race preview.
#19-Alex Kennedy: chassis No. 318, which was last raced by Jason Leffler at Pocono Raceway.
#20-Matt Kenseth: chassis not reported on race preview.
#22-Joey Logano: Primary Chassis: PRS-835. Last Raced - Backup at several races (not raced). Backup Chassis: PRS-836. Last Raced: Backup at several races (not raced)
#24-Jeff Gordon: chassis not reported on race preview.
#27-Paul Menard will pilot chassis No. 358 at Sonoma Raceway. This No. 27 Chevrolet SS was previously raced by Menard at Sonoma in 2011 and 2012.
#29-Kevin Harvick: will pilot chassis No. 395 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable in the Save Mart 350. Most recently, the California native raced this Chevrolet to a 15th-place result at Watkins Glen International in August 2012.
#31-Jeff Burton will race chassis No. 357 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable this weekend at Sonoma Raceway. This No. 31 Chevrolet, built during the 2011 season specifically for road course racing, was driven by Burton last season at Sonoma and Watkins Glen International where he piloted the machine to 11th and 30th-place finishes, respectively. RCR teammate Kevin Harvick also drove this chassis in 2011 at Sonoma where he finished ninth.
#34-David Regan chassis not reported on race preview.
#35-Josh Wise chassis not reported on race preview.
#36-Victor Gonzalez, Jr.: chassis not reported on race preview.
#38-David Gilliland: chassis not reported on race preview.
#39-Ryan Newman: Chassis No. 39-545: This chassis first saw action for the No. 39 team at both road-course races in 2009. At Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway that season, Newman qualified seventh and was marching toward a top-10 finish before getting spun in the latter stages of the event. He finished 17th. At Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, Newman qualified sixth. However, Newman's No. 39 Chevrolet was plagued with alternator issues, which caused the car to run at only about 75 percent throughout most of the race, leading to a 21st-place finish. The car also ran both road-course events in 2010. At Sonoma, it qualified 13th and finished 16th after picking up 10 laps in the final 15 laps of the event. At Watkins Glen, the team used pit strategy during the race to earn a 12th-place finish. Its most recent track activity came when the No. 39 team tested June 13 at Virginia International Raceway in Alton.
#42-Juan Pablo Montoya: chassis not reported on race preview.
#43-Aric Almirola:: The No. 43 team has prepared chassis No. 760 for Sonoma.
#47-Bobby Labonte: chassis not reported on race preview.
#48-Jimmie Johnson: will drive a new chassis, No. 801, at Sonoma. Chassis No. 543 serves as the backup.
    #55-Brian Vickers:
#56-Martin Truex Jr.: chassis not reported on race preview.
#78-Kurt Busch: chassis not reported on race preview.
#88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.: This weekend, crew chief Steve Letarte and the #88 team will unload Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 88-747. Earnhardt most recently raced this chassis at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International in August last year.
#99-Carl Edwards: RK - 853 new chassis. Backup: RK - 771 last ran at Watkins Glen
