Group qualifying debuts at Sonoma: Single-car qualifying on road courses will be shelved this week and later this summer at The Glen. Instead, cars will be assigned to one of five or six groups based on practice speeds, slowest to fastest. Within those groups, cars will be separated fastest to slowest and released at intervals. Each group will have a window in which cars can complete their qualifying - each likely receiving three laps at full speed. A car's fastest lap will count and the field will be set based upon overall qualifying speeds. The process has been used previously for NASCAR Nationwide Series road course qualifications.(NASCAR)(6-21-2013)

Little success for Road Course "Ringers": Road racing specialists - often dubbed "ringers" - fit the category of many being called; few if any answering. Mark Donohue was the last such competitor to score a NASCAR premier series road race victory on Jan. 21, 1973 at Riverside International Raceway. Canadian Ron Fellows heads the list of such drivers vying for a spot in Sunday's race. Fellows, who'll drive Joe Falk's #33 Chevy, has made 23 NASCAR Sprint Cup starts with a pair of second-place finishes at Watkins Glen his best performances. Truex, Jr. wins Sonoma: #56-Martin Truex, Jr. won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 Sprint Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway for his 1st win of 2013, 1st road course win and 2nd career win. His win breaks a 218 race winless streak. His first win was at Dover in June of 2007. Truex, Jr. led the most laps on the day - 51 of 110.
#24-Gordon finished 2nd followed by #99-Edwards, #78-Busch, #15-Bowyer, #5-Kahne, #9-Ambrose, #16-Biffle, #48-Johnson, and #29-Harvick.
#42-Montoya was running 2nd when he ran out of gas on the final lap. He finished 34th.
Pole sitter #1-McMurray finished 25th after having trouble with a broken shock late in the race.
There were 10 lead changes among 8 drivers and 7 cautions for 19 yellow flag laps.
The average speed was 76.658mph. NASCAR no longer announces the track attendance.

NASCAR Green-White-Checkered Race Procedure: NASCAR allows a maximum of three restart attempts prior to the White Flag under NASCAR's Green-White-Checkered flag finish. If the leader has taken the White Flag and the caution flag is displayed, the field is frozen and the race will not be restarted. Previously, there was only one restart attempt. New NASCAR Sprint Cup Road-Course Qualifying Procedure Announced: NASCAR announced that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will implement the group-based road course qualifying procedure used in NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Touring Series competition during its road-course events at Sonoma Raceway and Watkins Glen International. Under the new procedure, cars will qualify in groups instead of the traditional single-car qualifying runs held on oval race tracks. "The change will add an exciting element to road-course qualifying," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. "Fans will be treated to new strategy and increased competition with several cars on track at once."
The new qualifying rules for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at road courses are as follows:
· Cars attempting to qualify will be divided into groups. The number of groups, and amount of cars in each, will depend on the number of cars that practice for the event.
· Group assignments will be based on final practice times.
· Each qualifying group will be on-track for a set period of time, determined by the Series Director.
· A car's best lap time during the group session will be the qualifying lap time of record.
· A group's time begins when the first car receives the green flag at the start/finish line.
"This is going to be a terrific new format for our NASCAR weekend," said Steve Page, president and general manager of Sonoma Raceway. "It will intensify the action, with multiple cars on the track at the same time. It's a very positive development for our fans."
"The new format of qualifying at Watkins Glen International enhances the fan experience which is our top priority," said Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen. "Qualifying on Saturday for our Cheez-ItTM 355 at The Glen is even more of a not-to-be missed aspect of a weekend of high-quality racing."

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

#14-Tony Stewart: Chassis No. 14-731: This car debuted in impressive fashion last June at Sonoma as Stewart took Chassis No. 14-731 from its 24th-place starting spot and rallied it to a strong second-place finish. Its second and final start of 2012 came at Watkins Glen in August. It qualified ninth and Stewart wheeled it up to second, but on lap 71, he spun off the final corner of the 2.45-mile, 11-turn road course and backed into the Armco barrier lining the inside of pit road, sustaining heavy damage. Several trips to the pits allowed the crew the opportunity to repair the car enough to finish the race, and that's just what Stewart did, rallying from 29th on lap 74 to finish 19th when the checkered flag dropped after lap 90. With 2013 Chevrolet SS bodywork covering it, Chassis No. 14-731 returns to site of its debut race when it competes in this weekend's Toyota/SaveMart 350k.

RCR teammate Kevin Harvick also drove this chassis in 2011 at Sonoma where he finished ninth.

#39-Ryan Newman: Chassis No. 39-545: This chassis first saw action for the No. 39 team at both road-course races in 2009. At Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway that season, Newman qualified seventh and was marching toward a top-10 finish before getting spun in the latter stages of the event. He finished 17th. At Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, Newman qualified sixth. However, Newman's No. 39 Chevrolet was plagued with alternator issues, which caused the car to run at only about 75 percent throughout most of the race, leading to a 21st-place finish. The car also ran both road-course events in 2010. At Sonoma, it qualified 13th and finished 16th after picking up 10 laps in the final 15 laps of the event. At Watkins Glen, the team used pit strategy during the race to earn a 12th-place finish. Its most recent track activity came when the No. 39 team tested June 13 at Virginia International Raceway in Alton.
