· The first NASCAR race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was a NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race won by Ken Schrader on Nov. 2, 1996.
· The first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race was held on March 1, 1998, won by Mark Martin.

Kevin Harvick wins at Las Vegas: #4-Kevin Harvick won the Kobalt 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for his 1st win of the season, 1st win at LVMS and his 29th career win. Harvick has won at least one race in six straight seasons. Harvick has won or finished 2nd in six straight races and has won four times in the last nine races
#78-Truex Jr. finished 2nd followed by #31-Newman, #88-Earnhardt Jr., #11-Hamlin, #47-Allmendinger, #2-Keselowski, #42-Larson, #20-Kenseth and #22-Logano,.
Harvick led the most laps of the race with 142 and took the Chase points lead, 9 points over #88-Earnhardt Jr.

Pole winner, Gordon, wrecks in Happy Hour at Las Vegas, goes to backup: Polesitter #24-Jeff Gordon couldn't avoid hitting #10-Danica Patrick after she lost control of her car exiting Turn 2 in the closing minute of Happy Hour at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday. "Danica spun out and we hit her," Gordon said. "Oh my (expletive) god," replied crew chief Alan Gustafson. "It shouldn't be too bad, just the right front," Gordon said. "Isn't she smart enough to know when (indiscernible) to watch out," Gustafson added. Gordon scored his 79th pole on Friday for the Kobalt 400. He was 14th on the speed chart after posting a lap of 185.306 mph. He was on stickers tires at the time when Patrick lost control of her car. "The right front fender is pretty bad," spotter Eddie D'Hondt said from above the track. "Gosh, darn it."
"We'll have to get a backup," Gustafson concluded. Gordon wasn't alone. David Ragan also had an issue and slapped the right rear of the #18 M&Ms Toyota. "Got in a little too high in the gray stuff," Ragan radioed to the crew. Ragan will also go to a backup car.(Motorsport)
AND Pole-sitter #24-Jeff Gordon will go to a backup car after it was damaged when #10-Danica Patrick's car spun late in Saturday's final practice session at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Patrick spun and Gordon reported damage to his car. Gordon's spokesperson confirmed on Twitter that Gordon will go to a backup car. Gordon will start at the rear of the field because of the move. Gordon raced his backup car last season at Chicago, Charlotte and Texas. He finished second at Chicagoland and Charlotte during the Chase. He was racing for the lead late at Texas before contact with #2-Brad Keselowski saddled Gordon with a 29th-place finish.
Also, #18-David Ragan, driving for the injured Kyle Busch, hit the Turn 2 wall in the final minutes of the practice session. The Joe Gibbs Racing team rolled out a backup car for Ragan.(NBC Sports)(3-7-2015)

Pit Stall Selections: The selections of pit stalls for the Kobalt 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway have been made.
Pole sitter #24-Gordon chose pit stall 1 [as do most pole sitters].
Outside pole sitter #22-Logano took pit stall 2, right behind Gordon.
#5-Kahne, who starts 3rd took the 31st pit stall, the 4th stall with an opening in front of it.
The 43rd and final pit stall was taken by #42-Larson, who starts 5th.

Highlights of NASCAR's changes on pit road in 2015:
" Number of officials on pit road during race reduced from 43 to 10.
" 45 HD cameras will be mounted on the grandstand side of each track and directed toward pit road to monitor pit stops and officials call or clear penalties.
" Every camera looks at two pit stalls and the cameras record 100 percent of the race.
" Video feeds from cameras are fed to a production truck in the TV compound where eight NASCAR officials monitor stops for violations.
" Pit road speeding penalties will still be called from race control based on scoring loops.
" Pit stalls are laser measured
" Missing Lug Nuts are no longer a penalty.
" Fueling can start once car is stopped.

Gordon wins Las Vegas pole: #24-Jeff Gordon won the Coors Light pole for the Kobalt 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a track record speed of 194.679mph for his 2nd pole of 2015, 1st ever at Las Vegas and 79th of his career. Gordon has won 20 races from the pole out of 78 previous poles. Gordon now has two tracks he has not won a pole at: Kansas and Kentucky.

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

#3-Austin Dillon will pilot Chassis No. 477 in the Las Vegas 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In 2014, Dillon raced this Dow Energy & Water Chevrolet SS to a 24th-place finish at Dover in September, a 20th-place finish at Richmond in September and a 14th-place finish at New Hampshire in July.
#4-Kevin Harvick: will pilot the #4 Jimmy John's/Budweiser Chevy built on Chassis No. 4-858 in the Kobalt 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race Sunday at Las Vegas. Built in 2014, Chassis No. 4-858 made its debut at Texas on April 7, when the car started third and finished 42nd after a mechanical problem. Chassis No. 4-858 made its second appearance in May at Charlotte. Harvick started 11th and led 100 laps en route to a runner-up finish. Its most recent appearance came in September 2014, when it started and finished third and led 104 laps at New Hampshire.
#5-Kasey Kahne: Crew chief Keith Rodden has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 5-888 for Sunday's race at Las Vegas. Most notably, in 2014, Kahne led 70 laps and finished sixth driving the chassis at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July. He also raced it at Pocono Raceway in August, where he started 12th and finished 10th.
#10-Danica Patrick: will pilot Chassis No. 845 in the Kobalt 400. Formerly a #41 chassis for Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kurt Busch, Chassis No. 845 made its on-track debut at Las Vegas in March 2014. That weekend, Busch started the race from the 23rd position and finished 26th. The team also utilized the car at Darlington. Busch started the event from the 13th position and was running inside the top-10 until he got caught up in a late-race accident.
#14-Tony Stewart: Chassis No. 14-848 debuted last March at Las Vegas, where it qualified 24th and struggled to a 33rd-place finish. It was later determined a malfunction with the right-rear spring caused the car's ill-handling form. Chassis No. 14-848 made its second career start last April at Darlington. There, it rallied from being two laps down to finish ninth. The car has been dormant since, but with new Chevrolet SS sheet metal honed in the wind tunnel this offseason, the car returns to Las Vegas for its third career start and second at Las Vegas.
#15-Clint Bowyer: Chassis No. 812 serves as the primary chassis for Bowyer at Las Vegas, is is a brand new chassis. Chassis No. 816 serves as the back-up chassis and is new, was the backup in Atlanta.
#24-Jeff Gordon: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 24-895 for this Sunday's Kobalt 400. Gordon raced the chassis to a record-breaking fifth Brickyard 400 victory in July, a win at Michigan International Speedway in August and a 14th-place finish at Kansas Speedway in October in 2014.
#27-Paul Menard will utilize chassis No. 480 for this weekend's 267-lap event at the 1.5-mile track in Las Vegas. This #27 Quaker State / Menards Chevrolet SS has four previous starts from the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season including Indianapolis, Chicago, Charlotte and Homestead.
#31-Ryan Newman will pilot chassis No. 491 in Sunday's Las Vegas 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This #31 Caterpillar Chevy is a brand new car and will take to the track for the first time on Friday when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams practice and qualify at the 1.5-mile speedway.
#32-Mike Bliss Crew Chief Clinton Cram will be bringing chassis 742, which will serve as the primary car. This chassis previously ran at the fall Texas event in 2014 with Joey Gase. Chassis 755 will serve as the backup car.
#33-Brian Scott will pilot chassis No. 460 in Sunday's Las Vegas 400. This chassis has seen action at three previous tracks in 2014 including Auto Club, Atlanta and Phoenix.
#41-Regan Smith will pilot Chassis No. 838 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Sunday's Kobalt 400. It was previously a #10 chassis for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) teammate Danica Patrick. It made its debut in April 2014 at Texas Motor Speedway, where Patrick started 24th and finished 27th. She was running in the top-15 with the car in June at Pocono but cut a tire, crashed and finished 37th. Chassis 838 then raced in August at Atlanta, where Patrick started 27th but finished a career-best sixth. It was last used in October at Kansas, where Patrick qualified 29th and over the final 30 circuits moved from 23rd to record an impressive 16th-place finish. Since then, Chassis No. 838 has undergone updates and will see its first laps of the season this weekend at Las Vegas.
#48-Jimmie Johnson: For the Kobalt 400, Knaus has selected chassis No. 48-922, which is a brand-new car. The backup car is No. 48-824, which last saw action at Pocono in June 2014.
#55-Brian Vickers: will drive primary chassis 817 in which Clint Bowyer finished eighth with at Homestead and 18th at Kansas in October. The backup chassis 813 was last driven by Bowyer Charlotte in May finishing 17th, 10th and sixth at Michigan races and ninth at Dover in September.
#88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.: This weekend, crew chief Greg Ives and the No. 88 team will unload Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 88-810. Earnhardt most recently raced the car at Kansas in October 2014. It is the same chassis Earnhardt drove to Victory Lane at Pocono in June and August of last season.
