Phoenix Track Notes & History - Thursday:
· Construction was completed in January 1964. The facility consisted of a one-mile oval and a 2.5-mile road course.
· Alan Kulwicki won the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix on Nov. 6, 1988.
· The first spring race was held on April 23, 2005 and also the first night race, which was won by Kurt Busch.
· The track underwent its first repave in 2011. The construction began in March and concluded in September of that year.
· The following changes were made during the construction period (March - Sept., 2011): Widened the frontstretch from 52 to 62 feet; Reconfigured pit road with the installation of concrete pit stalls; Pushed the dog-leg curve between Turn 2 and Turn 3 out 95 feet, Tightened the turn radius of the dog-leg from 800 to 500 feet; Implemented variable banking to ensure the immediate use of two racing grooves, including 10-11 degree banking between Turn 1 and Turn 2; 10-11 degree banking in the apex of the dog-leg; and 8-9 degree banking in Turn 4.

· Geoffrey Bodine won the first pole at Phoenix in 1988 at a speed of 123.203 mph (29.220 sec.).
· There have been 21 different Coors Light pole winners, led by Ryan Newman with four.

Earnhardt Jr. wins at Phoenix: #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Quicken Loan's for Heroes 350(k) Sprint Cup Series race at Jeff Gordon Raceway (Phoenix International Raceway) for his 3rd win of the season, 3rd win at Phoenix and 26th career win. Earnhardt Jr. led 22 of the 219 laps.
The race was rain delayed for over six hours, getting the command to start engines at 9:00pm/et and taking the green flag at 9:27pm/et. During a late race caution on lap 195, it started raining again, just after NASCAR red flagged the event at 11:30pm/et on lap 219, the rain came down hard. With more rain in the forecast, NASCAR decided to call the race and made it official. It is only the second Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix in 39 races to be rain shortened and the first since October 25, 1998 when Rusty Wallace won a race shortened to 257 of 312 laps.
#4-Harvick finished 2nd (for the 12th time in 2015 and 43rd runner-up finish in his career) followed by #22-Logano, #18-Busch, #48-Johnson (pole winner), #24-Gordon, #41-Busch, #11-Hamlin, #2-Keselowski and #43-Almirola.

Race starts after 6+ hour rain delay: The Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Jeff Gordon Raceway (Phoenix International Raceway) was delayed due to rain and finally got underway just after 9:00pm/et. The track was close to being dry around 3:15pm/et then it started raining again. The Air Titans and track crew worked hard all day to get the track dry. The race was scheduled for a 2:41pm/et green flag. Pre-race ceremonies were held around 5:20pm/et, and the command to start engines was given by Cmd. Scott Pleus at 9:00pm/et. A competition caution is scheduled for lap 40. Race coverage switched to NBCSN as of 6:00pm/et as NBC had the Arizona at Seattle NFL game scheduled).

Rain Delay as of 8:55pm/et: The Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Jeff Gordon Raceway (Phoenix International Raceway) is being delayed due to on-and-off rain. The track was close to being dry around 3:15pm/et then it started raining again. As of 8:25pm/et, rain has stopped and the track is mostly dry, the issue is the apron, pit road and water seeping under the SAFER barriers. The Air Titans are still on the track. The race was scheduled for a 2:41pm/et green flag. Pre-race ceremonies were held around 5:20pm/et, all that is left is the command to start engines. Drivers are in their cars and things are getting close to starting engines as of 8:55pm/et. A competition caution is scheduled for lap 40. Race coverage has switched to NBCSN as of 6:00pm/et as NBC will air coverage of the NFL starting at 7pm/et (Arizona at Seattle).

NASCAR Green-White-Checkered Race Procedure: NASCAR allows a maximum of three restart attempts prior to the White Flag under NASCAR's Green-White-Checkered flag finish. If the leader has taken the White Flag and the caution flag is displayed, the field is frozen and the race will not be restarted. Previously, there was only one restart attempt. Johnson wins Phoenix pole: #48-Jimmie Johnson won the Coors Light pole for the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500(k) Sprint Cup Series race at Jeff Gordon Raceway (Phoenix International Raceway) with a TRACK RECORD speed of 143.158mph for his 1st pole of 2015, 3rd pole at Phoenix and 34th of his career. It is Johnson's first pole in 58 races, since winning the pole at Charlotte in May 2014. Johnson has won 14 races from the pole out of 33 previous poles.
#41-Busch is on the outside pole followed by #88-Earnhardt Jr., #19-Edwards, #78-Truex Jr., #42-Larson, #20-Jones, #4-Harvick, #5-Kahne, #18-Busch, #24-Gordon and #1-McMurray.

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

No More Chassis Selections: Recently many team stopped posting chassis selections on race previews.
This leaves only a handful of teams reporting/posting chassis selections.

Goodyear reconfirmed this tire set-up at a tire test at Phoenix on October 12-13 . . . drivers participating in that test were A.J. Allmendinger, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski . . . for Camping World Truck teams, they ran this left-side tire code (D-4612) at Phoenix last year, but this is the first time running this right-side code (D-4626) . . . compared to what the trucks ran here last fall, this right-side tire features a construction change and a compound change to enhance grip and help rubber-in the track . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Phoenix.

Goodyear Blimp: Goodyear's "Sprit Of Innovation" will be in the air over Phoenix International Raceway this weekend . . . this airship is based out of Carson, Calif. . . . the "Spirit of Innovation" will provide air coverage for NBC Sports' broadcasts of both the Xfinity race on Saturday and Sprint Cup race on Sunday.
