Daytona Track Notes & History :
· Groundbreaking for Daytona International Speedway was Nov. 25, 1957. The soil underneath the banked corners was dug from the infield of the track and the hole filled with water. It is now known as Lake Lloyd.
· The first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona was a 100-mile qualifying race for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 20, 1959.
· Richard Petty won his 200th career race on July 4, 1984 at Daytona.
· Lights were installed in the spring of 1998. However, the July race was delayed until October that year due to thick smoke from wildfires. The second Daytona race has been held under the lights ever since.
· The track underwent a repave in 2010.
· 2016 will mark the next phase in the existence of Daytona International Speedway as the Daytona Rising project is completed, ushering in the first 'motorsports stadium', a 400-million dollar project.

· The 2016 edition will be the 58th running of the Daytona 500.
· Although the first Daytona 500 was held in 1959, it has been the season-opener only since 1982.
· Kevin Harvick's 0.020-second margin of victory over Mark Martin in the 2007 Daytona 500 is the 12th-closest overall since the advent of electronic scoring in 1993, and the closest in a Daytona 500.
· Due to the overtime rules in NASCAR the longest Daytona 500 ever run was the 2010 and 2011 Daytona 500s both went 208 laps/520 miles - eight laps and 20 miles more than the scheduled distance.

Denny Hamlin wins the Daytona 500: #11-Denny Hamlin won the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway for his 1st win of the season, 1st win in the Daytona 500 and 27th career win. Hamlin led 95 of the 200 laps.
It is the 2nd Daytona 500 win for Joe Gibbs Racing and first since Dale Jarrett won in 1993. It is the first career win for crew chief Mike Wheeler.
It is the 11th straight season Hamlin has won a race (2006-2016)
#78-Truex Jr. led coming to the start-finish line, but Hamlin caught him and won by .010 seconds in a photo finish.
#18-Busch finished 3rd, followed by #4-Harvick, #19-Edwards, #22-Logano, #42-Larson, #7-Smith (kids eat free at Golden Corral on Monday), #3-Dillon and #41-Busch.
#20-Kenseth led on lap 199 and was quite a bit ahead of the 2nd line which Hamlin was in, Kenseth moved over to race Hamlin and ended up falling back and finished 14th.
#24-Chase Elliott, the pole sitter, spun on lap 20 while in the middle of the pack and did a lot of damage to the front end. Elliott came back out down 40 laps and finished 37th. #88-Earnhardt Jr., who led 15 laps, and was the race favorite, spun off turn 4 on lap 169 hitting the inside wall and ended his day, finishing 36th.
There no large wrecks, termed 'the big ones', during the race.
There were 20 lead changes among 15 drivers and 6 cautions for 31 yellow flag laps.
The average speed was 157.549mph.

Engine Rule at Daytona: the engine rule is a little different at Daytona 500 then the other 35 races, teams must run the same engine from Saturday's first practice session through the Budweiser Duel 150 mile qualifying races. If a team makes a change before the Duel, then it must start at the rear of the Duel 150 field and the Daytona 500 (as of 2015). After the Duel 150 races, teams can make an engine change before the Happy Hour practice session. After that, if an engine change is made, the driver will start at the rear of the Daytona 500.

Double Yellow Line at Daytona = do not pass: In order to emphasize the yellow-line rule at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway where passes are not permitted, NASCAR has made the single yellow line into a double-yellow line. The second yellow line was painted on the inside of the existing yellow line.

Smaller restrictor plate at Daytona: For Speedweeks at Daytona, there will be a minor reduction in the size of the restrictor-plate holes, which will decrease by 1/64th of an inch to 57/64ths.(NBC Sports)(1-26-2016)

Larger restart zone return in 2016: After doubling the restart zone for many of the races in last season's Chase, the expanded box will continue to be used this season, along with additional cameras and a senior official monitoring restarts from the pits.(NBC Sports)(1-26-2016)

Pit Stall Selections: The selections of pit stalls for the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway have been made.
Pole sitter #24-Elliott chose pit stall 4, the first stall available [as do most pole sitters].
Outside pole sitter #20-Kenseth took pit stall 43, the final pit stall.
#88-Earnhardt Jr., who starts 3rd, took the 21st pit stall, the first pit stall with an opening in front of it.
The 43rd and final pit stall was taken by #20-Kenseth, who starts 2nd (will fall to rear with a backup car).

Kyle Busch wins 2nd Can-Am Duel 150: #18-Kyle Busch won the 2nd Can-Am Duel 150 Qualifying race for the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway fir his third Duel win. #1-McMurray finished 2nd then #41-Busch, #19-Edwards, #95-Ty Dillon, #42-Larson, #10-Patrick, #14-Vickers, #93-DiBenedetto, #46-Annett, #38-Cassill, #35-Gilliland, #48-Johnson, #78-Truex Jr., #47-Allmendinger, #20-Kenseth, #13-Mears, #26-Richardson Jr., #43-Almirola, #83-Waltrip, #40-Sorenson and #31-Newman.
#93-DiBenedetto was the highest finishing Open Team (non-chartered team), finishing 9th. The other three Open teams: #35-Gilliland finished 12th, #26-Richardson Jr. finished 18th and #40-Sorenson finished 21st. #93-DiBenedetto gets in the race as the highest finishing Open team and will start 20th. #26-Richardson Jr. gets in the race via his qualifying speed. #40-Sorenson and #35-Gilliland will not make the race.
#31-Newman had an engine go sour halfway thru the race and will start the Daytona 500 38th. #13-Mears was running 2nd with two laps to go when his car ran out of fuel, he will start the 500 32nd. Coming to the checkered flag, #48-Johnson spun, trying to move around #1-McMurray, collecting #20-Kenseth, #78-Truex Jr., #41-Busch, #10-Patrick and #47-Allmendinger. Johnson, Kenseth and Truex Jr. will go to backup cars and have to start the Daytona 500 from the rear of the field.
The finishers of the 2nd Can-Am Duel 150 will line up on the outside (even number) line. #20-Kenseth will lineup and go out on the grid Sunday on the outside pole but have to fall back to the rear due to going to a backup car. He will, however, get the 2nd choice of a pitstall. 2nd Duel winner, #18-Busch will start 4th but move up to the outside pole before the start.. #26-Richardson Jr., in on speed, will start 40th.

Earnhardt Jr. wins first Can-Am Duel 150: #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the first Can-Am Duel 150 Qualifying race for the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway followed by #22-Logano, #21-Blaney, #4-Harvick, #5-Kahne, #16-Biffle, #34-Buescher, #17-Stenhouse Jr., #3-Dillon, #6-Bayne, #2-Keselowski, #59-McDowell, #7-Smith, #23-Ragan, #30-Wise, #15-Bowyer, #32-Labonte, #44-Scott, #27-Menard and #98-Whitt.
#21-Blaney was the highest finishing Open Team (non-chartered team), finishing 3rd. The other three Open teams: #59-McDowell finished 14th, #30-Wise finished 17th and #98-Whitt finished 22nd/last, after spinning out and leaving the race. #21-Blaney gets in the race as the highest finishing Open team and will start 7th. #59-McDowell gets in the race via his qualifying speed. #30-Wise and #98-Whitt will not make the race.
There were two incidents, on lap 43, #98-Whitt was trying to pass #59-McDowell and spun out, doing enough damage to the car that he could not finish. As the leaders were coming to the checkered flag, #44-Scott spun and was credited with 20th, the team will go to a backup car, so Scott will have to start at the rear of the field on Sunday.
The finishers of the 1st Can-Am Duel 150 will line up on the inside (odd number) line. #24-Ellott starts on the pole and #88-Earnhardt Jr. will start 3rd. #59-McDowell, in on speed, will start 39th.

BK Racing is not sure if #83-Waltrip will have to go to a backup car or if the team can fix it. #42-Larson will go to a backup car and have to start the Can-Am Duel 150 from the rear of the field (not the Daytona 500).

Elliott wins Daytona 500 pole: #24-Chase Elliott win the pole for the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway with a speed of 196.314mph, his first career pole and he is the youngest Daytona 500 pole winner. #20-Matt Kenseth will start 2nd, running 194.036mph. The front row is locked into those spots. The rest of the field will be determined by the Can-Am Duel 150 Qualifying Races on Thursday (7pm/et on FS1). The rest of the top12: #88-Earnhardt Jr., #18-Busch, #17-Stenhouse Jr., #48-Johnson, #21-Blaney, #3-Dillon, #19-Edwards, #11-Hamlin, #41-Busch and #22-Logano.
During round one of qualifying #88-Earnhardt Jr. was fastest, followed by #20-Kenseth, #24-Elliott, #18-Busch, #17-Stenhouse Jr., #3-Dillon, #48-Johnson, #21-Blaney, #11-Hamlin, #19-Edwards, #41-Busch and #22-Logano, these 12 drivers will go for the two locked positions of the pole and outside pole.

#78-Truex Jr had a roof flap that wouldn't close and didn't make a lap after going to the garage and not being able to get back within the five minute time limit once the car is presented for qualifying. Truex Jr will start the 2nd Can-Am Duel 150 from the rear of the field.
From the eight Open, non-Charter, teams running for the four open Daytona 500 spots, #21-Ryan Blaney and #93-Matt DiBenedetto secured spots by being the two fastest non-charter cars in qualifying. Blaney was 7th fastest and DiBendetto was 26th fastest. The next two drivers in speed were #59-Michael McDowell and #26-Robert Richardson Jr. If either Blaney or DiBenedetto are the highest finisher in their Duels, McDowell would make the race on speed. If both Blaney and DiBenedetto are the highest finisher in their Duels, then both McDowell and Richardson Jr. would make the Daytona 50 field. The remaining four drivers: #98-Whitt, #35-Gilliland, #30-Wise and #40-Sorenson, have to be the highest finishing non-Charter car to make the race.
The cars of #4-Harvick and #14-Vickers failed post-qualifying inspection as the cars did not have the track bars in compliance. Both qualifying speeds were disallowed. #4-Harvick who was to start 9th in the 1st Duel, will start from the rear. #14-Vickers was to start 10th in the 2nd Duel, will start at the rear with Truex Jr.

Daytona 500 Specific Qualifying - NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
- Thirty-six Charter teams will be assigned a starting position
- Four Open teams are eligible for starting positions
o The highest finishing Open team in each Can-Am Duel race earns a starting position
o The final two starting positions are awarded to Open teams based on Coors Light Pole Qualifying if not already a top finisher in a Duel race
- Qualifying sets the front row for the Daytona 500 and the starting lineup for the Can-Am Duel fields, with the number of Charter team and Open team cars split evenly throughout both races
- If qualifying is cancelled due to weather, the top two finishing Open teams from each Can-Am Duel race earn starting positions in the Daytona 500
- If the second Can-Am Duel race is cancelled due to weather, the highest finishing Open team from the first race earns a starting position, with the other three Open teams determined by qualifying
- If both Can-Am Duel races are cancelled due to weather, qualifying determines all four Open teams
- If qualifying and both Can-Am Duel races are cancelled due to weather, the combined practice speeds are used to determine the four Open teams
- If all on-track activity prior to the race is cancelled due to weather, 2015 Owner points will be used to determine the four Open teams

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

Notes: Teams in all three NASCAR series will run the same Goodyear tire codes at Daytona throughout Speedweeks . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that these teams have run at Daytona since July 2013 . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Daytona . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
