Denny Hamlin wins the Sprint Unlimited: #11-Denny Hamlin won the Sprint Unlimited Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway, for his third win the the non-points season opener. Hamlin also won in 2006 and 2014. It was the first time new Overtime procedures were use. #11-Hamlin got past the overtime line on the backstretch and made it to the start-finish line to take the white flag when #20-Kenseth, running 5th, got loose and into #78-Truex Jr. also collecting #1-McMurray, #10-Patrick and #2-Keselowski. The caution came out and the cars slowed and the cars that came across the finish line first were scored first. #22-Logano held off #27-Menard for 2nd. #42-Larson finished 4th and #13-Mears was fifth.
On lap 73, #2-Keselowski got into the rear of #19-Edwards, turning the #19 sideways, collecting #13-Mears, #18-Busch, #43-Almirola and #3-Dillon, this set up NASCAR Overtime.
On lap 57, #1-McMurray was bump drafting #5-Kahne, but the #5 got sideways, shot up into #47-Allmendinger. Kahne came back out, but left debris causing another caution and went to the garage
On lap 44, #48-Johnson and #13-Mears made contact while Johnson was in the middle. The #48 then moved up and bounced off #27-Menard and shot across the track and thru the grass, tearing the nose of the #48 Chevy.
On lap 23, #14-Vickers lost a tire in turn one while running in the middle and slid left into #88-Earnhardt Jr. tearing off much of the #88's door area, the #14 shot up the track and slammed head first into the wall, collecting #4-Harvick. The #14 came back down the track getting into #15-Bowyer. Other cars damaged of #41-Busch, #16-Biffle and #47-Allmendiner. That ended segment 1.

The starting order for the race was determined by a blind draw by crew chiefs in the Fan Zone at Daytona International Speedway. Eligible Drivers and Format Announced for 2016 Sprint Unlimited at Daytona: NASCAR announced the 25 eligible drivers and the format for the season-opening 75-lap Sprint Unlimited at the new Daytona International Speedway motorsports stadium on Saturday, Feb. 13. The event, which will be broadcast live on FOX, Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, marks the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race following the completion of DAYTONA Rising, the $400 million frontstretch redevelopment project that has transformed Daytona International Speedway into the first motorsports stadium in the world. "We're ready to go," said NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O'Donnell. "The anticipation for this season, this event and this venue is unprecedented. We are excited how the new stadium will provide a state-of-the-art showcase for the brightest stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series."
Once again, the non-points event will be split into two segments with a competition caution at lap 25 separating the segments. A popular element introduced before the 2015 event returns this year: select fans will be paired with each crew chief for a random drawing to determine starting and pit road positions. The drawings will take place on Friday, Feb. 12 at the Alert Today Florida Stage inside the Sprint FANZONE beginning at 3:30pm/et.
The 25 eligible NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers include the 2015 Coors Light Pole Award winners, former Sprint Unlimited race winners and former Daytona 500 pole winners who competed full time in 2015. All 16 drivers from the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup are also eligible for the race, and any remaining open positions are filled based on 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship driver points.

All-time Sprint Unlimited / Budweiser Shootout / The Busch Clash Formats:
1979-1990: 20-lap standard format
1991-1994: 20-lap distance with halftime break at the 10-lap mark with the field inverted.
1995-1996: 20-lap distance with halftime break at the 10-lap mark with field inverted. Starting position awarded to the Nationwide Series pole champion.
1997: 20-lap race with a break at the 10-lap mark with an inversion of the field.
1998-2000: 25-lap qualifying race featuring previous year's second-round qualifiers. Winner advances to the main 25-lap event.
2001-2002: 70-lap race featuring pole winners but also past Budweiser Shootout champions.
2003-2008: Held for the first time under the lights. 70-lap race features halftime break after the first 20 laps.
2009: Distance expanded to 75 laps. The top-six drivers in owner's points from each manufacturer earns a starting berth. A 10-minute halftime break will take place after 25 laps. In addition, each manufacturer will be able to enter a wild card driver.
2010: The field was made up of the 12 drivers who qualified for the previous year's Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, past NASCAR Sprint Cup champions, past Budweiser Shootout champions, past Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400 champions and the reigning Rookie of the Year.
2011: The field was made up of the 12 drivers who qualified for the previous year's Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup,
past NASCAR Sprint Cup champions, past Budweiser Shootout champions, past Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400 champions & Rookies of the Year of last 10 years.
2012: The field was made up of the 25 drivers who finished in the top 25 in 2011 Drivers Points,
previous winners at Daytona, including the Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and Budweiser Shootout events
2013 - 2014: Renamed the Sprint Unlimited after Budweiser drops the rights. The eligible field of drivers will consist of pole winners from the previous NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season and past winners of The Sprint Unlimited who have attempted to qualify for at least one race during the previous season.
2015 - current: The Sprint Unlimited field of eligible drivers changed to include all Chase drivers from the previous season and all past Daytona 500 pole winners as well pole winners from the previous NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season and past winners of The Sprint Unlimited. Drivers will have had to attempt to qualify for at least one race during the previous season. Still 75 laps, but only two segments, the first is 25 laps, the second and final segment is 50 laps.
