IMS announces spectacular holiday event: 'Lights at the Brickyard' coming in 2016: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will bring new levels of cheer to this holiday season with a spectacular "Lights at the Brickyard" seasonal event. Attendees will experience more than 40 scenes filled with 400 light displays along a 1.7-mile driving experience, which includes crossing the famous "Yard of Bricks" at IMS. In addition to the Lights at the Brickyard driving experience, other out-of-car holiday festivities and attractions will be offered for families to complete their adventure at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dates are subject to change, but the event is tentatively scheduled to run from Nov. 18-Dec. 31. Exhibits will include festive holiday celebrations as well as racing-themed installations throughout the iconic venue. Roger Penske to drive Indy 500 pace car: The winningest person in Indianapolis 500 history will be the celebrity pace car driver for next month's Indianapolis 500. Roger Penske never drove to victory lane at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In fact, he never drove an Indy car there at all, deferring his chance to take a rookie test in 1964. Another hotshot eventually got that opportunity. Perhaps you've heard of Mario Andretti. But Penske went on to grow his automotive business into a global leader, and excel on the track he won races at a staggering rate. His record collection of Indianapolis 500 trophies stands at 16 - and likely counting. He has four drivers set for a chance at victory lane again this year, but this time he will literally and figuratively lead them there. This will be his first chance to drive the pace car, and it comes in the 50th anniversary of Penske Racing's formation. Penske won his first 500 with Mark Donohue in 1972 and last year's race with Juan Pablo Montoya. In between were some of the greatest drivers IndyCar has ever known: Rick Mears, Bobby Unser, Danny Sullivan, Al Unser, Emerson Fittipaldi, Al Unser Jr., Helio Castroneves, Gil de Ferran and Sam Hornish Jr. In all, 11 drivers have a spot on the Borg-Warner Trophy thanks to Penske and his staff. Kyle Busch wins at Indianapolis: #18-Kyle Busch won the Crown Royal Presents the Jeff Kyle 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for his 4th win of the season, 1st win at Indianapolis, and 33rd career win. It his 3rd win in a row and 4th win in the last five races. It is also Toyota's first win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and breaks a 12 race winning streak for Chevy.
The race ended under a green-white-checkered finish after a late caution when #6-Bayne spun.
#22-Logano finished 2nd followed by #4-Harvick, #78-Truex, Jr., #11-Hamlin, #15-Bowyer, #20-Kenseth, #41-Busch, #42-Larson, and #2-Keselowski
Harvick's driver points lead is unchanged, he's 69 points ahead of #22-Logano.
Pole sitter #19-Edwards ran near the front most of the day, but go loose on a late restart and fell back into traffic. He finished 13th.
#24-Gordon, making his final Brickyard start, spun out and hit the wall. He had to go to the garage for repairs and finished 42nd.
Busch is now 32nd in the points standings and just 23 points out of 30th. He must be in the top 30 in points to be eligible for the Chase. He now needs around a 24th place average finish to make the top 30 in the 6 remaining races before the Chase begins.
There were 16 lead changes among 6 drivers. There were 9 cautions for 36 yellow flag laps.
The average speed was 131.656mph.

Women's World Cup Champion Lauren Holiday to drive Pace Car at Brickyard: Indianapolis native Lauren Holiday, a midfielder on the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup-winning U.S. National soccer team, will drive the Chevy SS pace car to start Sunday's Crown Royal Presents the Jeff Kyle 400 at the Brickyard. Holiday attended Ben Davis High School and has played on U.S. National teams for a decade. She has won two Olympic gold medals and has played in two World Cups. In the United States' 5-2 win over Japan in the championship match on July 5, she scored a goal. This is Holiday's first public appearance in Indiana since the World Cup. The SS continues Chevrolet's tradition of pacing races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Rule package specifics for Indy: At Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, NASCAR will debut its second track-specific rule package of the season. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series package planned for Indianapolis includes a 43-inch radiator pan (increased from 38 inches), a two-inch splitter leading edge, a one-inch wicker bill and nine-inch spoiler (increased from six inches). The increased downforce adds drag to the car and creates a larger draft window in the back.
For Indianapolis, teams will be allowed to change their engines prior to qualifying and data will be permitted at practice. A single gear will be used, but teams will bring four different gears. NASCAR will determine which gear is needed after practice. Teams will start on a 3.70 gear.
The Indianapolis rule package differs from the first track-specific rule package used this season at Kentucky which created lower downforce. The modifications helped produce a track-record 22 green-flag passes for the lead and a total of 2,665 green-flag passes overall.(NASCAR)(7-23-2015)

Pickler to sing National Anthem at Indianapolis: Country music sensation Kellie Pickler will sing the national anthem during pre-race ceremonies at the 22nd annual Crown Royal Presents the Jeff Kyle 400 at the Brickyard NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, July 26, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After first gaining fame as a 19-year-old contestant on the fifth season of "American Idol," Pickler has gone on to achieve tremendous success as a country music performer, recording artist and songwriter. In 2006, Pickler signed with 19 Recordings/BNA Records and released her debut album, Small Town Girl, which has gone on to sell more than 900,000 copies worldwide and produced three hit singles: "Red High Heels," "I Wonder" and "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind." Superspeedway qualifying format to be uses at Indy, Michigan: NASCAR officials told NASCAR Sprint Cup, XFINITY and Camping World Truck Series teams on Wednesday that it plans to use the superspeedway qualifying format at Indianapolis Motor Speedway next weekend and Michigan International Speedway next month. Beginning in May at Talladega Superspeedway, there were two rounds of qualifying with drivers turning one timed lap. The top 12 advanced to the final round. Each driver took a warm-up lap, the timed lap and a cool-down lap before returning to pit road. Last weekend, the format was scheduled to be run by the Sprint Cup Series at Daytona International Speedway, but rain forced the field to be set per the rule book by practice speeds.
Based on a random draw at Indianapolis, vehicles will line up on pit road for the first round -- rather than nose in or nose out in a pit stall -- and NASCAR will release drivers at a predetermined interval. The sanctioning body reserves the right to have more than one vehicle on track at a time. It's likely that two vehicles will be on track at the same time, but the second vehicle won't impede or help the one it follows on track. Following each lap, NASCAR will impound vehicles, and there will be a 10-minute break between rounds. Only during that break may teams make adjustments, and they will only be allowed to adjust tape and use a cool-down unit at that time. The final round qualifying order will be set from slowest to fastest speeds in the first round with starting positions 1-12 determined by the fastest laps in that second session.(NASCAR.com)(7-15-2015)

New rule changes announced for several tracks: A low downforce rules package similar to that scheduled for use by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams this weekend at Kentucky Speedway will be run in September at Darlington Raceway, according to Steve O'Donnell, Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer for the sanctioning body. In addition, teams will compete with a higher drag rules package at both Indianapolis Motor Speedway later this month as well as Michigan International Speedway in August and Richmond International Raceway. This weekend's Kentucky aero package features a shorter spoiler (reduced from 6 inches to 3-1/2 inches) and a splitter extension panel (radiator pan) reduction from 38 inches to 25 inches. The splitter will have 1-3/4 inches less overhang that what has previously been used this season. Combined, the aero changes are expected to lessen the amount of downforce on the cars by approximately 1,000 pounds.
While the Darlington setup will be similar to that slated for this weekend's Quaker State 400, there are differences. The spoiler will be 3-1/2 (instead of 3 inches) inches and the splitter will feature a 1/4-inch leading edge. There is no change in the size of the splitter extension panel (25 inches).
Although the tires used this weekend at Kentucky were not tested at the 1.5-mile track with the lower downforce platform during an April tire test, Goodyear officials were able to determine a tire for the Darlington package during a one-day test last week with drivers #14-Tony Stewart (Stewart-Haas Racing), #20-Matt Kenseth (Joe Gibbs Racing) and #2-Brad Keselowski (Team Penske).
For Indy and Michigan, the aero package will feature a 9-inch spoiler and 1-inch wicker bill; a rear fascia extension panel similar to that currently used for superspeedway events; a 2-inch leading edge on the splitter; and a 43-inch splitter extension panel.
Richmond will use a new tire. There are no scheduled aero changes for the upcoming race at Richmond International Raceway, the final race before the start of this year's Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, however Goodyear will not return with a multi-zone tread compound tire that had been used there recently. U.S. Marine announced as official namesake of Brickyard 400: When tens of thousands of race fans visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for one of NASCAR's biggest races of the summer, one name will stick out among the rest. Come Race Day, not only will fans recognize the name within the Crown Royal Presents the "Your Hero's Name Here" 400 race title, but they will also understand the reason why Jeff Kyle is being honored as an American hero. On Thursday in his home state, during a special reveal event at the Texas Rangers game, Kyle was announced as the winner of Crown Royal Canadian Whisky's annual "Your Hero's Name Here" program, which awards naming rights to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to a deserving hero. As the program winner, Kyle's name will be incorporated into the official race title, the Crown Royal Presents the Jeff Kyle 400 at the Brickyard. Kyle, of Lorena, Texas, was deployed multiple times to Iraq and Africa while serving in the military for eight years. During his time with the 3rd Marine Division, Kyle received the Navy Achievement Medal for leading the first Marine detachment to transport a nuclear submarine through hostile waters. After leaving the military, Sergeant Kyle has dedicated his life to helping his fellow servicemen and women through his tireless efforts to bring awareness to veterans' needs. Kyle advocates for veterans across the nation and provides support through his involvement with a handful of organizations.
A board member of the Guardian For Heroes Foundation, Kyle oversees the stewardship of the charity which provides free, in-home fitness equipment, health club memberships, personal training, life coaching and support for the disabled. He also plays a large role with American Valor, the foundation which runs the memorial benefit to honor his brother, CPO and U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. In addition, Kyle is one of the founders of Texas Elite Tactical Academy and trains individuals about firearms safety through his passion to educate those in a safe environment.
"Honestly, I don't feel like I'm deserving of this recognition," said Kyle of being named the winner of the 2015 "Your Hero's Name Here" program. "My true service to this country didn't begin until I got out of the military and I'm proud to be in the position I am."
Thursday at Globe Life Park in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers, over 29,000 fans witnessed the announcement of Kyle as the 2015 "Your Hero's Name Here" winner as the official race logo incorporating his name was unveiled during the pregame festivities. As Kyle made his way to the mound to throw the honorary first pitch, the logo was displayed across every screen within the stadium.
After the monumental moment, Kyle was greeted off the field by his closest family and friends who surprised him in celebration of the honor, alongside representatives from Crown Royal and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Kyle's wife and parents were in attendance, as well as Kyle's personal hero and nominator for the program, 2014 "Your Hero's Name Here" race namesake and Green Beret John Wayne Walding. "Jeff has made his sacrifice time and time again, whether he's serving his country overseas, locally or nationally," Walding said. "After everything he has done living his life for others, having something that is just for him will be really special."
This will mark the ninth time the Crown Royal brand has awarded NASCAR race naming rights to an adult fan. After receiving hundreds of entries during the nomination period, five heroes were chosen as finalists and adult fans had the opportunity to cast their votes for the person they felt was most deserving of the honor. Indianapolis officials planning to renovate track: Indianapolis Motor Speedway Officials are planning to renovate the historic track in time for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 next May. That doesn't leave a lot of time, given that there are races scheduled at the Brickyard in July and August and the construction won't begin until after those are run. "It's intensive," Hulman & Co. CEO Mark Miles said. "There's some things that we can do in the beginning stage to get ready, but basically all of this work has to be done from the end of this racing season this year before May of 2016. It's a lot of work to do." The next phase of this roughly $90 million project will improve gateway entrances, grandstand seating, and the overall fan experience. It's all part of a broader plan to modernize the facilities. Upgrades started last offseason with the installation of large, high-definition video boards and a new LED scoring pylon on the main straightaway - all part of the track's historic image that officials are trying to preserve. Now the plan is to replace the upper-deck bench seating in the front straight with seats with backs and add better wireless internet capabilities. An estimated five elevators will be added, too, for better handicapped accessibility to the sections overlooking the area between the start-finish line and the first turn of the 2.5-mile oval. Miles also said there are plans to change some suites near the fourth turn to give them a more club-level feel. The track's entrance gateways will receive a makeover, too, including the gate between the first turn and the street outside the ticket office. Jeff Gordon to Drive Indianapolis 500 Pace Car: Indiana racing legend and five-time Brickyard champion #24-Jeff Gordon will drive a Corvette Z06 pace car to kick off the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500, on May 24 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Gordon, who grew up in nearby Pittsboro, Indiana, is no stranger to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He won the first NASCAR race in the history of the famed 2.5-mile oval - the 1994 Brickyard 400 - and has won four more times, including last year. IMS considering hotel in turn 2: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway wants to build a 125-room hotel with apartments and a restaurant along Turn 2 of the track. Local developer Browning Investments Inc., on behalf of the IMS, put out requests for proposals, which were due March 20. How much interest the RFP generated from developers, or what timing might be for construction, is unclear. IMS President Doug Boles declined to discuss specifics. "We're in exploratory mode," he told Property Lines. "We'll sort that out in the next coming weeks, or months." But judging from the RFP, it seems IMS is operating on a pretty aggressive timetable. "The IMS would like construction to commence as soon as feasible," the RFP states. IMS wants to have new or renovated Turn 2 VIP suites completed in time for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 next year, with completion of the hotel to follow by May 2017, according to the RFP. The hotel also could include an unspecified number of apartments and leverage other entertainment opportunities at the track such as a golf-pro shop and clubhouse to complement the Brickyard Crossing golf course, the RFP said. It must offer at least 10,000 square feet of meeting space. A new hotel would bring overnight lodging back to the track. Indianapolis Motor Speedway adding SAFER barriers: Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials plan to install 1,560 additional feet of SAFER barriers at the 2.5-mile facility before on-track activities commence in May for the Indianapolis 500. IMS, which was the first to install the Steel and Foam Energy Reduction system in 2002, will add protection, track president Doug Boles said, around sections of a curved wall that serves as an emergency vehicle entrance point on the backstretch and in the short chute, to the drivers' left, between Turns 3 and 4. The upgrades, Boles said, had been planned before but expedited in the wake of Kyle Busch sustaining a compound fracture of the right leg and breaking left foot while slamming into an uncushioned concrete wall at Daytona International Speedway in the NASCAR Xfinity Series season opener in February. Construction is underway on the additions at IMS, Boles said. The facility currently utilizes around 9,000 feet of SAFER barriers, he said.(USA Today)(3-24-2015)

With the track opening at 6:00am on NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race Day on Sunday and the race beginning at 1:00pm, officials suggest fans arrive in Marion County no later than 8:00am to ensure arriving to IMS in time to experience all the traditional pre-race activities, the Brickfest Music Festival featuring great live country music headlined by Brantley Gilbert and the start of the race. In an effort to increase the safety and security of race patrons, Georgetown Road will be closed between 16th Street on the south and 25th Street on the north beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Brickyard 400 race morning to all vehicular traffic. After Georgetown Road is closed, no vehicular traffic, including placarded traffic, will be allowed to access the roadway. Those race patrons with placards who are accustom to entering IMS Gate 7 will have to enter through Gate 2 (W. 16th Street) or Gate 10 (30th Street). Local residents who reside on this stretch of Georgetown Road are encouraged to make provisions for this temporary traffic restriction as vehicles will not be permitted to access Georgetown Road from McCray Street, 24th Street, and all other access points in this area.
The second notable change involves the reopening of Georgetown Road after the race is complete. Georgetown Road will remain closed to vehicular traffic until the vast majority of race pedestrian foot traffic clears from the roadway (approximately 1 hour after the race).
An additional thoroughfare that will be closed during the running of the Brickyard 400 will be 16th Street between Olin Avenue on the east to Georgetown Road on the west from noon until the end of the race. In addition, 16th Street will not be accessible from Polco Street, which will be closed at 10th Street.
All traffic traveling east on Crawfordsville Road from the west will be turned around at Georgetown Road. Traffic traveling west on 16th Street from downtown will be diverted south on Olin Avenue.
Fans leaving IMS following all races during the Kroger Super Weekend should be aware that whatever direction they are sent, they will never be more than 1 to 4 miles away from a main interstate artery. Officers will direct traffic in the quickest, most efficient way and may suddenly change routes due to traffic congestion. Drivers can learn the locations of work zones and highway restrictions by calling INDOT's TrafficWise at 1-800-261-ROAD (7623) or viewing an online map at www.TrafficWise.IN.gov. Indianapolis Motor Speedway introduces New Scoring Pylon: When a race goes green at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a lot more fans are going to know it instantly. The third-generation scoring pylon was unveiled Tuesday on the main straightaway and among the many tricks on the full-LED-paneled pylon is the ability to completely flash with green lights. Or yellow. Or with an American flag look for pre-race. And then, in a blink, the 92-foot, 4-inch pylon can look just like the one that was removed last month after 20 years of service, documenting the lap count and running order of 33 cars on the track. "We wanted to generate more information, to give more information to the fans in their seats," said Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles. "That old pylon was iconic, so we wanted to make sure the size was similar - we're about two feet taller and three inches wider (with the new pylon) - but we wanted the ability to light it like everybody's used to, especially for the Indianapolis 500." For the Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400, the pylon can display the top 10 on the track while also circulating through spots 11 through 43. It can also provide enhanced stats information like lap times, miles per hour and time behind the leader.
Needless to say, that's a far cry from the pylon erected in 1994 that stood sentry over the first 20 Brickyard 400s, two decades of Indianapolis 500s and other events. That pylon, powered by 6,496 30-watt light bulbs, could only display basic race scoring with a space at the top for race logos. The new pylon can fully light up with "Indianapolis Motor Speedway," race logos or other digital artwork. The possibilities are considerable. "I think the fans, even fans that are a little concerned about it, are going to find that we've done a great job of paying real close attention to our tradition but also giving them something that makes their experience here at the Speedway better," Boles said. Looking at the new Panasonic-built model, it's hard to fathom the first IMS pylon that went up in 1959 and was manually operated. More than a half-century later, the pylon now has animation and video capabilities. And the enhancements at IMS won't stop there. Indianapolis Motor Speedway will delay apron project: Seldom has an eight-foot-wide stretch of asphalt been so anticipated and yet so delayed. But as preparations build for next month's NASCAR race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, track officials have decided another year must pass without the apron, the proposed racing room below the white boundary line in each corner. The reason: NASCAR officials want time to study the effects of changes made to the track. The Brickyard 400 is July 27. IMS had planned to begin apron installation June 9, the day after its vintage car weekend, but NASCAR thought that was too late. "They asked if we could postpone (the project) so they could test it," IMS president Doug Boles said Tuesday. "We said, 'That makes sense; we understand that.' " Boles said the heavy Indiana winter delayed several IMS projects, including the installation the asphalt sections totaling more than a mile in length. Green Beret announced as Namesake of Brickyard 400: When Green Beret John Wayne Walding attends his first NASCAR race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July, he'll see a familiar name plastered around the historic race track - his own. Walding was announced the winner of Crown Royal's annual "Your Hero's Name Here" program, which awards naming rights to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at IMS to a deserving American hero, during last night's live broadcast of the CMT Music Awards. Walding, of Little Elm, Texas, is a highly decorated Army veteran who served for 12 years, completing tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. While overseas in 2008, Walding was involved in a fire fight during a mission to capture a high value target, during which he lost the lower part of his right leg. After recovering from his injury, Walding was the first amputee to graduate the Special Forces Sniper School. He completed the Army 10 miler on foot and the 2009 Boston Marathon utilizing a hand cycle, within a year of the accident. Among Walding's many awards and badges are the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge. Walding was nominated for the program by his brother and lives in Little Elm with his wife Amy and their four children. He is the founder of Five Toes Custom, which employs wounded veterans in an effort to provide support and direction within their lives.
"The fact that Crown Royal cares enough to say 'thank you' for what I've done is a true validation for my sacrifice," said Walding following the unveil event. "The magnitude of those two words goes above and beyond." Indiana Motorsports Commission approves modifications to IMS: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced plans on Tuesday for track modifications and upgrades to enhance fan experience that include additions of track aprons in the turns for NASCAR events, new video screens, improved catch fencing, a new scoring pylon and improved restroom facilities. The list of proposed improvements carries a price tag of about $140 million, according to Jeff Belskus, Hulman & Company president and chief administrative officer. The project does not include lights for the facility -- a $20 million project in itself -- because it was determined that lights did not bring a strong enough return on investment. The project also includes the recently completed repaving and renovations to the road course that will be used for an IndyCar race scheduled for May 10, 2014. The plans were approved by the Indiana Motorsports Commission. The plans also outlined the need for increased concession choices, more on-site entertainment, improved access and improved traffic flow and parking. Wireless access throughout the facility was also addressed as a priority to enhance the fan experienced. Indy adds former NASCAR executive to staff: Hulman & Company CEO Mark Miles has completed the formation of his leadership team by naming two accomplished sales and marketing executives with extensive automotive and racing industry roots as the leaders of the sales, licensing, marketing and communications functions of Hulman Motorsports.
Connell J. (C.J.) O'Donnell, who has worked in key marketing positions for various brands within Ford Motor Company, will join Hulman Motorsports as chief marketing officer, and Jay Frye, a racing executive who successfully transformed two teams into NASCAR Sprint Cup contenders, is the new chief revenue officer.
The appointments complete a reorganization that began earlier this year. This includes combining the commercial functions of INDYCAR and IMS, including sales, licensing, marketing and communications, into Hulman Motorsports, which O'Donnell and Frye will lead. In May, Derrick Walker was named as president of INDYCAR operations and competition. Other members of the Hulman leadership team include Jeff Belskus, president and chief financial officer of Hulman & Company; Gretchen Snelling, vice president and chief legal counsel; Robby Greene, president of IMS Productions; and Doug Boles, president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation.
Frye led the transformation of the Red Bull Racing Team in NASCAR Sprint Cup into a contender that earned a berth in the 2009 Chase for the Championship during his tenure as vice president and general manager from 2008-11. In addition, he spent 12 years at MB2 Motorsports, LLC, a NASCAR Sprint Cup team he helped build from the ground up into a multi-team operation. As the chief executive officer and general manager, he negotiated what was an industry-first - a sponsorship/ownership package with The Valvoline Company. Frye also has other sales and marketing experience, including several years with Anheuser-Busch. Frye will lead a combined team of INDYCAR and IMS sponsorship sales, licensing and account services staff. IMS suite and hospitality sales will remain an IMS function under Boles' direction.
O'Donnell recently served as Ford's group marketing manager for electric vehicles in Detroit, where he was recognized for the launch of several hybrid vehicles and has orchestrated a record year for hybrid and electric vehicle sales. During his 20-year career with Ford, he also has led marketing for the Lincoln and Jaguar brands domestically and abroad and was a member of a small team that led the turnaround of the Mazda brand. Lights at Indy?: Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials have confirmed the installation of lights is very much on the radar as part of an improvement program planned for the next several years at the historic speedway. Once the system is installed, it's expected the Brickyard 400 will shift to prime time as early as the 2015 season. The idea has sparked a great deal of conversation throughout the garage area if a Brickyard 400 under the lights might be the cure for an event that although is still considered a crown jewel by many in the sport has suffered a tremendous drop in attendance since its 1994 debut. An estimated 80,000 fans showed up for last years race, a far cry from the 260,000 that jammed the track as recently as 2006. "It is one of the projects we have identified as a potential,'' Doug Boles, new Indianapolis Motor Speedway president said earlier this year. "That is a good indicator. As we go through this process and better define what makes sense, we will know. But it's important enough for consideration that [lights are] on that list.'' ESPN's Sage Steele to drive pacecar at Indy: ESPN "SportsCenter" anchor and Indiana University graduate Sage Steele will drive the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Pace Car to lead the field of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series superstars to the start of the Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com on Sunday, July 28 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Chevrolet also paced the previous 19 Sprint Cup races at IMS, and this year's Brickyard 400 will mark the sixth time a Camaro has paced the race.
"I am honored and just floored that it's all coming full circle like this," said Steele, who also graduated from high school in the Indianapolis area. Steele, who graduated in 1995 from Indiana University with a bachelor of science degree in sports communications, began her television career in 1995 at WSBT-TV in South Bend, Ind., as a producer and reporter. Her next stop was in Indianapolis at WISH-TV where she covered the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400 races at IMS, served as the beat reporter for the Indianapolis Colts and covered the 1997 NCAA Men's Final Four. In August 1998, Steele moved to Tampa and worked as a reporter, anchor and host for WFTS-TV before taking a similar position with Fox Sports Net in Tampa as a reporter. In April 2001, Steele became the anchor for the debut of "Comcast SportsNet" in the Washington/Baltimore region, where she anchored the show "SportsNite" for six years.
Steele joined ESPN in 2007 and is a co-anchor of ESPN's "SportsCenter." Most recently, Steele served as update anchor during live daytime "SportsCenter" editions, which debuted in August 2008. She also previously contributed to "First Take" and "Mike & Mike in the Morning," and has served as a guest co-host of ESPN2's "SportsNation." Away from the studio, Steele anchored the daytime "SportsCenter" segments from the NBA Finals in 2012 and has hosted the Scripps National Spelling Bee each year since 2010.

In addition to its primary war fighting mission, the Infantry battalion might be tasked to perform other types of operations, including stability operations and civil support operations, semi independently or as an integral part of a larger force. Indy making security changes for Brickyard: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will more than double the number of entrance lanes for fans attending Sunday's Brickyard 400 NASCAR race following lengthy delays for fans before the Indianapolis 500. The speedway said Monday it's increasing the number of entry gates from 11 to 18 by converting some exit-only gates. The total number of entrance lanes will top 160. The speedway also said in a release that it's hiring more staff with crowd-flow experience, adding better signage directing fans to gates and express lanes, and will direct fans to less crowded gates. Heavier security after the Boston Marathon bombings angered thousands of Indy 500 fans who stood in line for up to two hours, with some told to lug coolers back to their cars parked blocks away because of new size restrictions.(Associated Press)(7-23-2013)

Boles named president at Indianapolis: Doug Boles has been named president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Boles was put in charge of the facility in a Tuesday announcement made by Hulman & Co. CEO Mark Miles. Boles has been interim chief operating officer since early this year and replaces Jeff Belskus as president of IMS. Miles made official a handful of personnel moves on Tuesday that he'd been discussing for some time. Belskus will continue as president of Hulman & Co. and add chief financial officer to his duties. Robby Greene is returning to IMS Productions after filling in as COO of IndyCar since late last year. Marine honored as Brickyard Sprint Cup race namesake: While deployed in Iraq, Gunnery Sgt. Samuel Deeds, a diehard NASCAR fan, dreamed of working in the sport after completing his service. In 2005, those dreams took a back seat when Deeds placed himself in harm's way to save the lives of his fellow Marines. This summer Deeds will travel to one of the country's most historic tracks, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), not as a fan or employee, but as the race namesake. On June 27 in his hometown of Erlanger, Ky., Deeds was recognized as the winner of Crown Royal's "Your Hero's Name Here" program, which awards one deserving individual naming rights to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race Sunday, July 28 at IMS. Surrounded by friends, family and Marines, Deeds cemented his place in the NASCAR record books by laying the final brick, engraved with the official race logo, in a ceremonial "Yard of Bricks" at Flagship Park in Erlanger.
While deployed in Iraq, Deeds came across an improvised explosive device (IED) while setting up a vehicle checkpoint. Upon seeing fellow Marines approaching, he exposed himself to the device, risking his life to save others. He was severely injured and underwent more than 30 surgeries and procedures following the blast. Three years later, while still recovering, Deeds' heroic instincts took charge once again when he saved the lives of three individuals caught in a rip tide off the coast of North Carolina.
In addition to Deeds' friends and family, special representatives from Crown Royal, Big Machine Label Group (BMLG), and IMS attended the ceremony and spoke of Deeds' many accomplishments. Indianapolis Motor Speedway reduces capacity by an estimated 10%: Since last year's Indianapolis 500, thousands of grandstand seats overlooking Turn 3 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway have been removed. Gone, too, are several rows of seats on the front straightaway, reducing capacity at the venerable venue by another couple of thousand. Those alterations follow the removal of the First Turn Terrace, a bleacher section that five years ago sat on the inside of Turn 1. It was torn down to extend the IMS road course. The result of the changes means the May 26 Indy 500 will have the smallest seating capacity since 2000, the last time the Speedway had a major makeover. In 2004, The Indianapolis Star inspected the world's largest sports facility and counted 257,325 seats. Today, that figure is at 235,000. That's an estimated 11,600 seats removed in the North and Northeast Vistas, 5,136 gone in the Turn 1 infield and the loss of the low-row seats. House OKs IMS bill, despite dispute over funding source: A bill to help pay for $100 million in improvements at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway passed the House on Monday-but only on its second try, as some lawmakers expressed frustration about a funding source for the project. That funding-money now dedicated to the horse racing industry for purses and breeding programs-is actually part of another bill. But several lawmakers viewed the pair as a package, despite insistence by the Speedway bill's sponsor, Rep. Tim Brown, R-Crawfordsville, that lawmakers should consider the proposals separately. SB 91 also creates a new $1 tax on the tickets for major events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and captures new sales and income tax revenues generated there. Indy events add $510 million in Indiana Economy: Events and operations at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and associated motorsports businesses generate more than $510 million annually to the Indiana economy, according to a study by the Indiana University Public Policy Institute. The study addressed the direct and indirect economic contributions made by IMS through its operations, spending by out-of-state visitors to the Indianapolis 500, Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard and Red Bull Indianapolis GP annual events, and the presence of nearly all INDYCAR race teams and the Dallara facility in the Indianapolis area, which are attracted to Indiana due to the presence of the Speedway.(see full report atIMS.com)(3-26-2013)

Senate OKs bill to help Indianapolis Motor Speedway: The [Indiana State] Senate voted 37-12 to help the Indianapolis Motor Speedway finance improvements. The measure, Senate Bill 91, now goes to the House for debate. It would create a motorsports development district at the speedway, comprised of the track, the golf course and two buildings across the street. Up to $5 million annually of the sales and income taxes generated within it will be set aside for 20 years to help the Speedway finance improvements. Those include new lights potentially for night races; upgrades to the grandstands, restrooms and tunnels, and making the facility more accessible to the handicapped.(Indianapolis Star)(2-22-2013

Indy seeks state aid; could put up lights: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is seeking aid from the state as part of a plan to fund up to $100 million in improvements at the famed racetrack. The plan would create a "motor sports investment district" to collect existing state sales, income and corporate taxes generated in an area that includes the IMS to help pay for the improvements, IMS officials said. The collected taxes would raise up to $5 million a year that the state would contribute to help pay off bonds for the improvements over a 20-year period, while the IMS would put up $2 million each year. Legislation to enact the plan will be unveiled Monday by Sen. Michael Young, R-Indianapolis. Approval by the General Assembly would be required before it could become law. Indystar.com was first to report the plan on Friday night. IMS plans to upgrade its infrastructure with changes including new video boards, better lighting and more modern grandstands, IMS officials said. Plans call for spending $70 million to $100 million. "It's really about keeping this iconic facility competitive in the sports and entertainment world," said Jeff Belskus, IMS CEO and president. Officials say they want to make the speedway more flexible, perhaps for different types of events down the line. The lighting, for example, would make it possible for some races to run at night. NASCAR fans have complained about searing heat during the mid-summer Brickyard 400, set for July 28 this year. Asked if the IMS would move the Brickyard to the cooler evening hours if the money went through, spokesman Doug Boles said, "There could be a chance." The proposal could also help address a looming cost for the IMS. Brickyard 400 still profitable with smaller crowds: Despite sharp attendance declines in recent years at the Brickyard 400, the event remains hugely profitable for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, motorsports industry experts say. NASCAR officials estimated attendance at this year's race in Indianapolis at 125,000, down from 138,000 last year. In 2007, race attendance was more than 200,000. The Speedway makes enough television revenue-close to $6 million-to pay its NASCAR sanctioning fee, according to industry experts, leaving the track with most of the revenue from ticket sales, concessions and parking. Motorsports business experts estimated that the Speedway made at least $9 million in ticket revenue from Sunday's Brickyard 400 and another $1 million to $2 million from Saturday's Nationwide Series race, which until this year has been held at Lucas Oil Raceway a few miles to the west. The IMS also for the first time hosted the Grand Am Series, but that wasn't likely a big moneymaker since attendance was only about 10,000. NASCAR warns drivers about Indy restarts: In light of Saturday's controversy over restarts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NASCAR race director David Hoots stepped to the microphone during Sunday's pre-race Sprint Cup Series drivers meeting and delivered a lecture. "We spend a lot of time talking about this," Hoots said sternly. "We tear up race cars, we ruin people's days because we can't handle those responsibilities. Whether it be you, I, whatever. We're all in it together. So let's do it right and do it the way we know how to do it so we don't have to take the extra steps of getting out there with micrometers and measurements and bring the field down. Usually, when we get involved to that point and you ask us to, you don't like the results! So I'm asking you to accept your responsibilities and do it properly." Hoots said several times each driver had "roles and responsibilities" in starting and restarting the race. Whether it's the pole-sitter conducting a smooth restart or a driver on the second row not pushing the cars in front of him too much, all drivers need to play a part, he said. "If this is not done in this very simple process, there's a chain reaction that occurs," he said. "... You have shared responsibilities on not trying to take advantage of something that's this simple and create such a mess that could ruin a lot of people's days at the start."
Hoots emphasized the flagman -- not the pole-sitter -- starts the race. The pole-sitter then must lead at the start line, barring "some exceptions." The leader, he said, should not brake-check or "burp" the car or do any kind of false start. On restarts, the rule is different because the flagman isn't the decision-maker. The leader has earned the right to decide when to hit the gas in the restart zone, and the second-place car cannot beat him to the line. But the leader has not earned the right to "screw around with the restart," Hoots said. "You all have a role in this," he said. "You have a role in this every week. Indy considering installing lights: Despite attendance struggles at the Brickyard 400 (now known as the Crown Royal presents the Curtiss Shaver 400 at the Brickyard) over the past five years, there's no talk from NASCAR or Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials about discontinuing the race. IMS officials said the commitment on both sides couldn't be stronger for continuing the race long-term and making it stronger than it currently is. "I don't think either party could be more secure in its relationship with [the] other," said IMS spokesman Doug Boles. "There is no thought internally or within NASCAR that this race shouldn't continue." To bolster sagging attendance, Speedway officials are breaking new ground this year and may be willing to break even more ground in future years. For the first time, the IMS will host Grand Am and NASCAR Nationwide races over the weekend in conjunction with the Sprint Cup headliner on Sunday. More radical changes could be coming. Speedway officials this week told IBJ that they have discussed installing lights at the massive facility-a project that would cost tens of millions of dollars-to allow races at night, particularly NASCAR events. "Those types of discussions are more common now than they were even a year and a half ago," Boles said. "One consideration is it would allow us to get fans out of the heat of the day." Erecting lights would be a major departure for Speedway officials, who previously have shunned the idea. Burn Ban at The Brickyard: A significant fire hazard remains in all areas of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway due to persistently dry environmental conditions and the absence of significant rainfall. Due to the aforementioned conditions the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is instituting a burn ban that adheres to the burn ban put in place on June 28th, 2012 by the Town of Speedway. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway burn ban prohibits open burning such as comfort fires or camp fires of any kind. Fireworks and grilling devices that use a source of ignition other than gas are also not permitted. The following ignition sources will not be permitted on Indianapolis Motor Speedway property during the Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard event from July 25th - July 30th, 2012:
Comfort fires or camp fires on the ground or in elevated devices
Charcoal or any non-gas grills of any kind
Fireworks of any kind
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway asks all customers camping on or around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway property to be careful concerning the potential threat of ignition to dry areas of grass that could be caused by common sources of heat and fire that are permitted such as: cigarettes, recreational vehicle generator exhaust, vehicle engine heat, fluids from hot vehicle engines and gas grills.
Gas grills are permitted in camping and tailgating areas during the Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard event, but are required to be operated at a minimum of 18 inches off the ground, with 36 inches off the ground being the preferred height for the safest usage. The Speedway Fire Department will assist in patrols and education of customers during the Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard event concerning the Town of Speedway burn ban as well as the burn ban initiated by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to ensure a safe environment for all customers attending the event. Indy race named Crown Royal Presents the Curtiss Shaver 400: When local firefighters saved Troy native Curtiss Shaver's life during a tragic farming accident, Shaver knew he'd found his calling. Though the accident claimed the lower part of his left leg, Shaver persevered and began a lifelong career as a firefighter and certified EMT with the goal of giving back to his community. In a special event [Wednesday] at Troy Fire Station No. 1, a ceremonial Yard of Bricks was revealed to recognize Shaver as winner of Crown Royal's "Your Hero's Name Here" program. The national contest renames the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 29th after a deserving American hero. In an effort to bring a little piece of the famed track to Troy, Alabama, Crown Royal orchestrated a special ceremony that resulted in the laying of a replica "Yard of Bricks" in Troy's downtown area. The final engraved brick bearing the race logo was personally laid by Shaver, culminating the ceremony. This race will mark the sixth time Crown Royal has awarded race naming rights to an adult fan. This year, the program focused on all of the unsung heroes who make a difference in their communities, from firefighters and police officers, to first responders and local volunteers. U.S. Women's Soccer star Hope Solo to drive Brickyard 400 pace car: United States women's national soccer team goalkeeper Hope Solo will drive the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Pace Car at the 2011 Brickyard 400, leading the starting field to the green flag Sunday, July 31 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Solo became a worldwide sensation earlier this month as one of the leaders of the U.S. national team that advanced to the Women's World Cup final in Germany, losing to Japan on penalty kicks. She was named the top goalkeeper of the tournament and was named to the 2011 World Cup all-tournament team. Brickyard 400 Race Day Traffic: Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials are encouraging fans to plan ahead for their trip to the Brickyard 400 presented by Big Machine Records.com on Sunday, July 31. IMS officials recommend that fans leave early for the track on Race Day. Fans can get all the latest traffic information and updates on Twitter at either @IMS or @Indstatepolice. Fans also are encouraged to leave early and plan routes accordingly during the entire race weekend due to the major construction project on the west corridor of Interstate 465 in Indianapolis. Due to construction on I-465 southbound, the eastbound Crawfordsville Road ramp is closed (northbound is still open). Also due to construction, 38th Street is restricted to two lanes. Motorists are encouraged to use the eastbound 10th Street ramp from I-465 as the main route to the track.
Infield parking is not accessible through Gate 2 (Main Gate) from 16th Street eastbound, as left turns are not permitted into that entrance on Race Day. Parking for 16th Street motorists in both directions will be available on the south side of 16th Street after public infield parking fills on all three days of the event.
IMS will route traffic differently into the facility from 30th Street than it has in the past. All westbound traffic will enter Gate 11 and be parked in Lot 7. All eastbound traffic will enter Gate 10 and follow the same procedure as in the past to either be directed to Turn 3 (until full) or into Lot 7. This change will alleviate congestion and will allow for nearly twice the amount of traffic to enter the facility at the same time from 30th Street.
The Indiana State Police is advising spectators to visit www.in.gov to receive information on the most direct routes to take when arriving and leaving the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A PDF file entitled "Traveling Tips to the Brickyard 400" is available on the front page of the ISP's website, and road conditions and construction updates also can be found at the main ISP site, www.in.gov/isp. Brickyard ticket sales down? There have been rumors that ticket sales for next week's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway were again off-pace from last season, but an internal NASCAR memo obtained by ThatsRacin.com and The Observer seems to confirm the problem. In the memo, which was distributed by email on Friday, team public relations representatives were thanked ahead of time for their drivers' participation in a Sprint Cup Series autograph session at the track. The memo said, "ticket sales are significantly behind from previous years" at IMS. Since sales have been dramatically down since the 2008 tire problems at the track, another significant decline would appear ominous. Crown Royal may become Brickyard 400 title sponsor: UPDATE: An unlikely match could give the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a new title sponsor for the Brickyard 400 and a seven-figure windfall starting next summer. That's the direction things are headed, despite appearances to the contrary. Sources are beginning to bubble that Crown Royal is ready to sign a deal to become the title sponsor of the Brickyard 400. It's rumored to be a multi-year deal starting in 2012. Don't be surprised if Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO Jeff Belskus along with Crown Royal honchos make an announcement at this year's race. And stunningly, the Crown Royal deal... is financially bigger than any other current NASCAR title sponsorship deal. Yes, that means bigger than the Coca-Cola 600 and Irwin Tools Night Race (Bristol) deals. IMS Features Largest 2011 Sprint Cup Autograph Session On July 30: The largest driver autograph session of the Sprint Cup Series season is scheduled for Saturday, July 30 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Race Day ticket holders for the Brickyard 400 presented by Big Machine Records.com. IMS adds Nationwide race for 2012: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be the epicenter of American stock car racing and North American sports car racing July 26-29, 2012, as the NASCAR Nationwide Series and GRAND-AM Road Racing will join the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for four exciting races during the inaugural Super Weekend at the Brickyard. Indianpolis Motor Speedway considering taking Nationwide race UPDATE2: An Indianapolis Motor Speedway spokesman Tuesday confirmed talks to bring a sports car race to the facility's road course in 2012 during NASCAR's Brickyard 400 weekend, but he said no agreement is in place. The biggest obstacle: converting the facility from a road course configuration, which would be used for a Friday endurance race of Grand-Am's Rolex Series, to an oval for NASCAR on Saturday and Sunday. NASCAR owns Grand-Am, which would bring a title sponsor to cover the sanctioning fee estimated at $200,000. Also being discussed is a move of the weekend's Nationwide Series race, which comes with a guaranteed check of about $700,000 due to the television contract, from Lucas Oil Raceway to IMS. UPDATE: Officials at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and NASCAR are in serious discussions about adding a Grand-Am Rolex Series race and possibly a Nationwide Series race to the 2012 Sprint Cup weekend at the Brickyard, multiple sources confirmed Wednesday. The Nationwide race currently at O'Reilly Raceway Park would move to IMS on Saturday afternoon. A three-hour Grand-Am endurance race likely would run on Friday afternoon so as not to conflict with the Truck Series race held that night at ORP. Doug Boles, the director of public relations at IMS, could not comment on a potential Nationwide move but acknowledged discussions to bring the Grand-Am event to the weekend for a road course race are taking place. He said the track needs more than one event to give fans more value for their ticket. Officials at ORP said they have not been told that the Nationwide race will move to IMS next year, but added if that happened it would be a big blow. UPDATE2: Indianapolis Motor Speedway will add Nationwide and Grand-Am Rolex Series races to its Sprint Cup weekend in 2012, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Tuesday. A press conference is scheduled for 1:30pm/et on Wednesday at the start-finish line at IMS. The Nationwide race will move from its longtime home at Lucas Oil Raceway. The Truck Series is expected to remain at LOR, likely on Friday night. Indy expects empty seats for Brickyard 400: Ticket sales for this year's Brickyard 400 are lagging behind last year's pace, and race organizers worry it could produce a second straight record-low turnout for the July 31 race. "We don't disclose numbers, but you saw a lot of empty seats here last year, and I think you're going to see more here this year," Indianapolis Motor Speedway president and CEO Jeff Belskus told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Declining ticket sales have already hit two of NASCAR fans' favorite tracks this season - Bristol and Talladega. And Dover, which has traditionally drawn smaller crowds, had empty sections at Sunday's race. Indianapolis could be the next to see declining numbers. Last July's attendance estimate was 140,000 - nearly half of the 270,000 that came to the track in 2007. Belskus concedes that the poor economy and high gas prices have made an impact on ticket sales, but he believes the tire fiasco of 2008 and too many stock car races in the Midwest have also played a part in the decline.(Indianapolis Star)(5-18-2011)

IMS's Carnegie's life celebrated: He had a voice larger than life and became as much a part of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the famed Yard of Bricks, but Tom Carnegie was one of us, a friendly, caring man of the people. That was the common theme throughout a host of tributes paid Feb. 15 during a celebration of the life of Carnegie, the longtime IMS Public Address announcer who died Feb. 11 at age 91. An overflow crowd packed the IMS Hall of Fame Museum for the ceremony honoring Carnegie, who served as the Public Address announcer at IMS for 61 consecutive years, from 1946-2006. He called 61 Indianapolis 500's, 12 Brickyard 400's and six United States Grands Prix for millions of fans at IMS. Indianapolis television sports anchor Dave Calabro served as host of the ceremony. Calabro worked for many years on the public address at IMS with Carnegie and leads the announcing team today. Members of Carnegie's family, including two of his children, attended the ceremony. Nancy George affectionately shared an anecdote about how she and her brother and sisters would ride their bikes around IMS as children, pretending they were race drivers. 'Voice of the Speedway' Tom Carnegie dies: The golden voice of the Indianapolis 500 is now quiet. Tom Carnegie died today at a health care facility in Zionsville. He was 91. Carnegie began working as Indianapolis Motor Speedway's lead announcer in 1946, a career spanning six decades. His deep, measured voice was iconic even among the icons of auto racing. "He's one of those personalities where you wish time would stand still so he could be forever with us," 1969 race winner Mario Andretti once said. A longtime Zionsville resident, he is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, D.J., and their three children, Blair, Charlotte and Robert. Until 2007, when he helped call his final 500, he seldom missed a day in May at the Speedway. For fans and competitors, it wasn't a day at the track until he said "Good morning, race fans" across the loud speakers.

Looks like the final 2011 off weekend will be July 23-24th and the 2nd Pocono race on 8/7. All 2011 race dates have been announced except the Brickyard 400, two Pocono race and two Talladega races, but by basically looking at the 2011 schedule as it stands, pretty easy to place those race dates. IMS could take Nationwide race from ORP: Indianapolis Motor Speedway's answer to dwindling interest in NASCAR's Brickyard 400 apparently includes acquiring the Nationwide Series race held at O'Reilly Raceway Park. IMS chief executive officer Jeff Belskus confirmed interest in hosting stock car racing's No. 2 series, which has been at ORP for 28 years. It draws an annual crowd of 30,000 the night before the 400. "Our partners have mentioned it to us," Belskus said Thursday. "We are looking for ways to invest in the Brickyard 400." Acquiring rights to the Nationwide race would bring a cash infusion to IMS, which saw attendance for last weekend's race plummet. The television revenue from hosting a Nationwide race is worth about $500,000, or about half of what's needed to offset the sanctioning fee. Increasing the IMS ticket price for Saturday -- currently $15 -- likely would cover much of the rest of the cost, but the real advantage is a bolstering of the weekend schedule. This year, IMS had two hourlong practices Friday, followed by qualifying and two practices Saturday. With Nationwide involved, IMS could showcase nearly non-stop track activity both days, which would be good for suite sales and hospitality. A Nationwide race likely would be run Saturday afternoon at a distance of 200 or 300 miles. Former IMS boss Tony George always resisted the temptation to go after the Nationwide race because he wanted to be a good neighbor to ORP and its owner, NHRA. The other conflict was the Brickyard's sponsor. Allstate, a rival insurance giant, paid upward of $2 million a year over a four-year contract. It isn't clear what ORP, which also has a Camping World Truck Series race, would do if it loses Nationwide to IMS. Late Monday, NASCAR informed the NHRA, which owns ORP, the 2011 race would not be moved to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which in the wake of attendance drops is looking to beef up its schedule on Brickyard 400 weekend. Avoid Construction, Arrive Early To Indy: NASCAR fans are encouraged to arrive early in the Indianapolis area during the Brickyard 400 on July 23-25 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway due to a major Interstate highway construction project west of the racetrack. The southbound Interstate 465 exit to Crawfordsville Road (southbound Exit 16A) is closed for the remainder of 2010 as part of a major reconstruction of I-465 on Indianapolis' west side. This traditionally has been a popular exit for fans heading to the Speedway from points north and northwest of IMS.
For 2010 Brickyard 400 activities, fans traveling southbound on I-465 should use the 38th Street exit (Exit 17), located one mile north of Crawfordsville Road, and proceed east following signage toward the track.
The Indiana State Police advises spectators to visit its website, www.in.gov/isp, to receive information on the most direct routes to take when arriving and leaving the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Road conditions and construction updates also can be found at the site.
Fans also can avoid traffic and parking issues by using shuttle bus service provided by the Free Enterprise System, Inc. Air-conditioned shuttles will operate from three locations downtown and from Indianapolis International Airport. Sprint Cup Hauler parade in Speedway IN: Brickyard 400 fans can get an up-close view of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series "haulers" - the semi trucks carrying the stock cars competing July 25 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway - at the second annual Hauler Parade and Festival on Thursday, July 22 on Speedway's Main Street. The event takes place from 5-8:30 pm, with live music featuring local country music act KJ & TKJ's kicking off activities at 5 pm at the corner of 15th and Main Streets - across the street from popular local restaurant Dawson's on Main. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series haulers - approximately 50 are expected - will arrive at 6 pm in parade fashion behind the 2010 Brickyard 400 Pace Car and park on Main Street from just south of 15th Street in two lines stretching to 10th Street. Earlier Indy 500 start time likely: An earlier starting time for the Indianapolis 500 to accommodate drivers wishing to compete in it and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on the same day is likely to happen, Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO Jeff Belskus said this week. "We're inclined to change our starting time," Belskus said. "We do want to try to make it happen." Belskus said ABC, which owns television rights to the 500, has been consulted and hasn't indicated it would oppose a switch to 11 a.m. from the current 1 p.m. The idea gained momentum in May when Bruton Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports Inc., proposed putting up a $20 million bonus for any driver who could win both races on the same day. Smith and Indy Racing League CEO Randy Bernard were asked about the status of their negotiations last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Bruton offers a driver $20 million if wins both Indy 500 & Coke 600: On Thursday night's edition of NASCAR Race Hub, reporter Wendy Venturini scored an exclusive sit-down interview with Speedway Motorsports Inc., chairman Bruton Smith. As part of the interview, Smith talks of ongoing discussions with his counterparts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway about the possibility of linking the famed Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 ... with the possibility that a driver who wins both on the same day earning a $20 million bonus.
Bruton Smith: "We do ... we do ... we want to surprise the fans. Every time they come, we want them to say, 'Wow, I didn't know about that.' I'm working on something now that I thought would be great, for say, next year. And that is we'll maybe do something that would cause drivers to get more interested in running (the Indianapolis 500) and then coming here and ... driving 1,100 miles of racing. It would take a Superman-type driver to (win both events)."

Tony George resigned from posts at Indy: The Board of Directors of Hulman & Company and affiliated companies, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has received the resignation of Anton H. "Tony" George from the board of directors effective immediately, according to Mari Hulman George, chairman. "As members of his family, we are sorry to see Tony leave," said Mrs. George. "We are grateful for his service to our company as a board member and of course for formerly serving as CEO and president of our companies. I speak for our whole family in wishing him well. All of us had hoped that Tony would continue to serve on the board, and we made that clear to him. We are disappointed with his decision to step down despite our wishes." His resignation removes George from any remaining role in Hulman & Company, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indy Racing League, IMS Productions and other affiliated companies. His term as CEO of the family companies ended June 30, 2009. He continues to be involved in racing through his ownership of Vision Racing, a competitor in the IZOD IndyCar Series of the Indy Racing League. The board vacancy will be addressed at a later date. In addition to Mari Hulman George, board members include Nancy George, Josie George, Kathi George-Conforti and Jack Snyder. Mari Hulman George said she is very pleased with the direction of the company and the progress that has been made during the last six months. Indy staff plants trees: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway provided the manpower and NASCAR the material to add a little more green to Indianapolis' Gustafson Park on Oct. 13. A total of 36 IMS employees volunteered their time to plant 40 trees in the 30-acre Indy Parks facility, located at the intersection of 30th Street and Moller Road - located a mile northwest of Turn 4 of the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. Gustafson plays a key role for the nearby Eagledale neighborhood and Northwest High School, serving as a gathering place with its shaded picnic area, community swimming pool, football fields and baseball diamonds. The tree planting at Gustafson Park is part of NASCAR's Green Flag Tree Planting Program. For every green flag waved during the 2009 Brickyard 400, NASCAR pledged to donate 10 trees to the local community. There were a total of four green flags during the race, won by three-time Brickyard 400 winner Jimmie Johnson. The program was launched during the 2009 season, at select NASCAR venues, with plans to expand it in 2010. No NASCAR-GrandAm double-header at Indy: NASCAR's GrandAm series finally released its 2010 tour schedule, and on the Sprint Cup's Brickyard 400 weekend - July 25th is race day - the sports car series will be idle. NASCAR president Mike Helton had indicated three weeks ago, just after a GrandAm test around Indianapolis Motor Speedway's Formula One course, that a Cup-GrandAm double-header at Indy was possible. In fact the prospect of more Cup-GrandAm double-headers - such as at Daytona in July - appeared possible. Indy double-header in 2010?: Next summer's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis could be part of a novel double-header -- with NASCAR's Grand American sports cars also running at the Speedway on the Formula One road course during the Brickyard 400 weekend. "It's a matter of how they might be able to change over to the road course from the oval," NASCAR president Mike Helton said. NASCAR ran both the Grand Am and Sprint Cup events the same day at Daytona in July, in what is seen as a test of track changeover techniques and promotions for other similar double-header weekends for NASCAR's stock cars and sports cars. "But Daytona is a lot different than Indianapolis," Helton points out. "It used to take a long time (as much as six to eight hours) to change over Daytona from one to the other. IndyCar owners support moving up Indianapolis 500 start time: The Indianapolis 500 will return to its more traditional start time -- 11 a.m. -- if some influential IndyCar Series team owners have a say in it. The leaders of Team Penske and Andretti Green Racing said Saturday they support a change back to the earlier start time to help the event attract NASCAR drivers, which they figure would boost television ratings for the 500. Currently, the 1 p.m. start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway does not allow enough time for drivers to complete the 500 miles and then fly to Concord, N.C., for the Sprint Cup Series night race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Team Penske president Tim Cindric brought the subject up in an owners meeting held with Indy Racing League officials prior to the race at Chicagoland Speedway. Allstate terminates Brickyard sponsorship: Allstate and Indianapolis Motor Speedway are ending their five-year title sponsorship arrangement for naming rights to the NASCAR race at the track. It was run Sunday for the final time as the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Speedway spokesman Ron Green said it's unlikely a replacement will be sought and the race will return to its former name as the Brickyard 400. Indy Transporter Parade: A parade of approximately 40 colorful NASCAR Sprint Cup Series transporters will drive through greater Indianapolis on Thursday evening, July 23, the day before the 16th Allstate 400 at the Brickyard opens at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The parade will start at 6:00pm in Greenwood and travel on Interstate 65 North to Interstate 70 West. The transporters will exit at Holt Road and drive to 10th Street before stopping on Main Street in Speedway, where they will be on display for the public until 8:30pm. Changing Indy 500 start time not being discussed: For those hoping that the Indianapolis 500 might change its start time to encourage drivers to be able to do both the IndyCar Series race and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, think again. Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corp. President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Belskus, who oversees both the IRL and the race track, said Tuesday during a news conference at the track that he has had no discussions about changing the start time since taking over the position three weeks ago. The Indianapolis 500 start time likely would have to change from its recent 1 p.m. EDT slot for it to be possible for a driver to do both events. It would be hard for Lowe's Motor Speedway to start the NASCAR race later than 5:45 p.m. because of the length of the 600-mile race, which takes more than four hours to complete. With the crossover of open-wheel drivers to NASCAR - such as #14-Tony Stewart, #42-Juan Pablo Montoya, #7-Robby Gordon, #34-John Andretti and #77-Sam Hornish Jr. - heavy interest could be generated if drivers could do both races and rumors have circulated that the start time could be altered.(SceneDaily)(7-22-2009)
