Donate a toy, drive a lap at Michigan International Speedway: Cars are hitting the track again this weekend at Michigan International Speedway, but the most important drive is taking place in the track's infield. The eighth annual MIS Charity Track and Toy Drive goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Participants are asked to bring an unwrapped toy or bag of nonperishable food. The weather-dependent event is hosted by MIS Cares, a donor-advised fund of the non-profit NASCAR Foundation that supports programs that assist and inspire youth in Jackson and Lenawee counties. Donated toys will go to the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots campaign in Jackson and Lenawee counties, while the food goes to the Brooklyn Food Pantry and St. Mary's of Good Counsel in Adrian. Brenner named President at Michigan: International Speedway Corporation announced that it has named Rick Brenner as President of Michigan International Speedway effective Monday, September 19 . Brenner accepts the role, making a move from Minor League Baseball (MiLB) to motorsports. Brenner most recently served as President of DSF Sports and Entertainment for over 10 years, the company that owns the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. In that role, Brenner managed all facets of the multi-unit business as well as leading the design and construction of the Bowling Green Ballpark. Prior to DSF, Brenner spent six of his 11 years with the Trenton Thunder as Chief Operating Officer and General Manager. Curtis leaving Michigan International Speedway: International Speedway Corporation announced that Roger Curtis is leaving his position as President of Michigan International Speedway, effective immediately, to pursue new opportunities. A replacement has not been announced. Joie Chitwood, ISC Chief Operating Officer, will oversee MIS operations in the interim. "We want to thank Roger Curtis for his many years of service with ISC, and the last 10 years, specifically, as the face of Michigan International Speedway," stated Chitwood. Larson wins Michigan: #42-Kyle Larson won the Pure Michigan Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway for his 1st win of the season, 1st win at Michigan and FIRST career win. Larson led a race high 41 of 200 laps to win his first race.
The victory came in Larson's 99th start in the series, long after most observers expected Larson to record his first win. It also broke a 99-race drought for Chip Ganassi Racing, dating to Jamie McMurray's victory at Talladega in October 2013. It was also the first win for car #42 since Juan Pablo Montoya won Watkins Glen in August 2010.
#24-Elliott (ties his career best finish) finished 2nd followed by #2-Keselowski, #21-Blaney, #4-Harvick, #48-Johnson, #19-Edwards, #1-McMurray, #11-Hamlin and #22-Logano.
#14-Tony Stewart clinched a position in the top 30 in the standings and therefore a berth in the Chase with his 21st-place finish.
#34-Chris Buescher lost a cylinder early in the race, finished 35th, and held onto a seven-point lead over #23-David Ragan for the 30th spot in the standings.
Buescher must remain in the top 30 after the next two races to parlay his Pocono victory into a Chase berth.
The win marked the first time a graduate of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity and NASCAR Next programs has reached Victory Lane in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
It is the first time in NASCAR history that first time winners in each of the three National series on the same weekend: Larson at Michigan in the Cup series. Michael McDowell at Road America in the XFINITY Series and Brian Moffitt winning the Michigan Truck Series race.
There were 20 lead changes among 13 drivers and 4 cautions for 17 yellow flag laps.
The average speed was 162.730 mph.

Actor Jake Short serves as honorary pace car driver: Actor Jake Short will serve as the honorary pace car driver for Sunday's Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway. Short, the star of Disney XD's Lab Rats: Elite Force, will lead the field to the green flag for the Pure Michigan 400. He will also serve as the Honorary Kids Drive NASCAR Ambassador this weekend at the racetrack. "It's a thrill for me to go to Michigan to participate in in a NASCAR event," Short said. "We all grow up and want to be race car drivers - and I get to be experience that. There's nothing like a NASCAR race." NASCAR Rolls Out Lower Downforce Package For Third Time This Season: NASCAR will roll out its updated lower downforce rules package it used at Michigan and Kentucky earlier this season in Sunday's Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The rules package developments are part of an industry-wide collaboration to further enhance the racing. Earlier this season, welded truck trailing arms and new brake cooling rules were put into place. The following updates to the rules package help to further reduce downforce and sideforce:
Reduce skew generated sideforce by setting rear toe to zero (same rule used in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race)
Aero package tweaks to reduce aero-generated downforce and sideforce
Spoiler shortened from 3.5 inches to 2.5 inches
Splitter reduced to 2 inches

Jason Hall Rolls On as Honorary Starter of Pure Michigan 400: Slow Roll comes to the fastest track in NASCAR this Sunday, August 28 when honorary starter Jason Hall waves the green flag at the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Hall, of Detroit, is the co-founder of Slow Roll Detroit - possibly one of the largest weekly bicycle rides in the world. He is a true ambassador to the City of Detroit having won such awards as The Best of Michigan Business Award as a marketing savant, The Vanguard Award from Detroit Young Professionals, The 2014 D Show Ambassador Award from Adcraft and most recently the Sierra Club's Green Cruiser of the year. United States Army Chorus Quartet to sing national anthem at MIS: The United States Army Chorus Quartet will sing the national anthem prior to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The chorus will also sing the national anthem prior to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Careers for Veterans 200 race on Saturday. The U.S. Army Chorus Quartet's rendition of the national anthem will follow pre-race and driver introductions both days. Fans will want to be sure to be in their seats for "The Star-Spangled Banner." The U.S. Army Chorus Quartet has performed across the country and at some of the most prestigious locations. The rendition is sure to be an unforgettable performance. The U.S. Army Chorus Quartet is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2016. The group is celebrating with concerts that include a reunion of past members, many of whom have had successful careers in music education and as soloists on Broadway and opera stages around the world. The U.S. Army Chorus Quartet was established in 1956 and maintained a reputation of excellence in the performance of male choral literature. Currently, the U.S. Army Chorus Quartet is one of the only professional male choruses. Beyond the traditional military music and patriotic standards, the U.S. Army Chorus Quartet covers a broad spectrum which includes pop, Broadway, folk and classical music. Michigan track surface receiving extra prep work before race: Michigan International Speedway is doing some extra preparation to its track surface before the return of NASCAR action next weekend. The speedway has been utilizing a "tire dragger" - which is dragged along the surface to help apply extra rubber - since the beginning of the week and plans to continue to use it through Tuesday of next week. The tire machine is being run every day for eight hours a day, officials said. It's the same device used by Kentucky Speedway after its repave and Bristol after it "polished" the lower racing groove. "We elected to do it because we work closely with and listen to NASCAR and the experts who drive the track - the drivers, who say the racing will get that much better when the top groove gets rubbered in and widens out," said Sammie Lukaskiewicz, the speedway's vice president of marketing and communications. "It's fast here, as you know. So having a wider groove will allow cars to pass each other and allow three-, four- and five-wide passing."(Motorsport)(8-22-2016)

Red Wings Head Coach Jeff Blashill named grand marshal for the Pure Michigan 400: Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Jeff Blashill will serve as the grand marshal for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pure Michigan 400 on August 28 at Michigan International Speedway. Blashill will give the command of "Start your engines!" when the Pure Michigan 400 gets underway. "It's an honor to serve as grand marshal for the Pure Michigan 400," Blashill said. "I was born and raised in Michigan and have had the opportunity to spend most of my coaching career here, so I know how passionate the fans are for all sports. I'm thrilled for the opportunity to meet the drivers, take part in the pre-race activities and soak in the atmosphere on race day."
Blashill is entering his second season as head coach for the Red Wings after being named to the position on June 9, 2015 and leading the Red Wings to their 25th consecutive playoff berth in 2015-16. The 42-year-old is the 27th coach in franchise history, the first American to lead the Red Wings and just the third Michigan native to coach any major Detroit sports team, joining Steve Mariucci (Detroit Lions, 2003-05) and Dave DeBusschere (Detroit Pistons, 1964-67).
The head coach joins a select group of Detroit Red Wings who have held prominent roles for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Michigan International Speedway. Chris Osgood, Niklas Kronwall and Jimmy Howard have all helped to start the race in the past making this a Pure Michigan partnership.
Born in Detroit and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Blashill won the Louis A. R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL's most outstanding coach in 2013-14 and was named head coach for the 2014 AHL All-Star Classic. In his three seasons with Grand Rapids, he compiled a 134-71-12-11 regular-season record and a 29-21 mark in the postseason, winning seven of nine total playoff series. He is the only coach in Griffins history to qualify for the playoffs in three consecutive seasons, leading the team to 92 points or better each year. "We are excited to bring together these two iconic Michigan sporting traditions and have Coach Blashill on board as grand marshal of the Pure Michigan 400," said Dave Lorenz, Vice President of Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. "A native Michigander who has lived and worked throughout the state, I have every confidence Coach Blashill will demonstrate the same passion and enthusiasm on race day as he does on game day in Hockeytown." Blashill is entering his sixth season with the Red Wings organization, spending one season as an assistant coach for the Red Wings (2011-12) before serving as head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit's American Hockey League affiliate, from 2012-15. NASCAR will use lower downforce package at Michigan: In a rules bulletin Thursday morning, NASCAR announced it will run the lower downforce rules package in the Aug. 28 race at Michigan International Speedway. The changes, which include a shortened spoiler, a reduced splitter and the elimination of rear skew that generated sideforce, also were used in the June 12 race at Michigan, the July 9 race at Kentucky Speedway and at the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May. The objective is enhancing the ability of drivers to pass. NASCAR vice president of innovation Gene Stefanyshyn said the same rules likely would be used for the 2017 season. NASCAR still is considering a few tweaks that including shifting some downforce from front to rear, removing some rear downforce or adding some sideforce. Any further tweaks will be made in collaboration with teams after the Aug. 28 race at the 2-mile oval. Bands added to Michigan's Keloorah lineup: The lineup for Keloorah in August just got bigger. A Thousand Horses and Drake White and The Big Fire have been added to an already jammed packed festival schedule on August 26-27. The two acts join country music favorites Chase Rice, Chase Bryant, Kip Moore and Tim Dugger at Keloorah during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend at Michigan International Speedway. Keloorah is a unique concept. It's a two-day music festival that takes place on Friday and Saturday during the August 26-28 NASCAR weekend at MIS. The talent lineup combined with unparalleled activities at the festival such as go karts, an arcade and paint and foam deejay party elevates the post-race fun. The lineup for Keloorah is impressive and will give NASCAR fans and music festival fans an experience to remember. Lower downforce package could return at Michigan UPDATE: The low, low downforce package was met with mixed reviews at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday - but could we see it again before the Chase for the Sprint Cup begins? NASCAR will meet with team representatives on Wednesday to review the latest experience with the proposed 2017 configuration for the Cup Series to determine what, if any, changes need to be made and if the sport needs to take another run with the car prior to next season. While NASCAR has said repeatedly there will be no changes to the current 2016 rules package for the Chase, the possibility of running the lower downforce package at Michigan Speedway next month is not completely off the table. [NASCAR senior vice president of competition Scott Miller] believes the lower downforce package actually enhanced the racing on Saturday. He believes the additional grip provided by a higher-downforce package could have been a recipe for disaster. "The low, low downforce package, if that's what we're calling it now, helped at this race on the repave," Miller said. "I think the corner speeds would have been extremely high, and with the higher downforce stepping out of the groove might have even had more consequences than we had (Saturday night)."(Motorsport)(7-12-2016)
UPDATE: Goodyear is planning ahead for whatever challenges NASCAR has in store for the tire manufacturer. While no decision has been made regarding which aerodynamic setup the Sprint Cup Series will return to Michigan International Speedway next month with the 2017 prototype or the current 2016 low downforce package, the tire manufacturer will be prepared. "When we tested there to come up with the package that we ran at the first Michigan (June), we tested under both conditions - both downforce settings - with that same setup," Stu Grant, Goodyear's General Manager of Worldwide Racing, told Motorsport.com. "We had a lot of discussions with NASCAR, 'So what are you guys going to do rules-wise, tire-wise and so on?' It didn't really matter to us. We were ok on both downforce settings with that setup. So, whatever they choose, we have the tire for that. I know there's discussion about going back there with lower downforce setting. Then there's the school of thought, 'Let's get another data point and change it.' I have not heard one way or another what the decision it, but we're prepared both ways."(Motorsport)(7-20-2016)

Michigan saw decline in attendance: While NASCAR no longer releases attendance numbers, MIS President Roger Curtis said there was a slight decrease in ticket sales for the June 10-12 FireKeepers Casino 400 race weekend. The numbers were what MIS expected, Curtis said, given the rain last June and the lack of action in the August race. Meanwhile, local business owners said they saw no decrease in sales, with some saying sales were slightly higher than during the 2015 June race weekend. This includes JR's Hometown Grill and Pub and Buddy's gas station and convenience store, both in Brooklyn. Curtis said opening the infield early was a big success, with an estimated 40 to 45 percent of the infield full by the time it's normally opened Thursday. The suites were sold out and camping numbers were strong, he added. "A lot of our June guests, even if they weren't there (in August), were reluctant to purchase a ticket until they saw a good race," Curtis said. "We've already had a lot of folks call or email about tickets for August. I'm confident that next year's FireKeepers Casino 400 will be ahead of where it was this year."(MLive)(6-16-2016)

Logano wins at Michigan: #22-Joey Logano won the FireKeepers Casino 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway for his 1st win of the season, 2nd win at Michigan and 15th career win. Logano led 139 of the 200 laps and won for the 3rd time when starting from the pole.
#24-Chase Elliott finished 2nd (his career best finish) followed by #42-Larson, #2-Keselowski, #4-Harvick, #19-Edwards, #14-Stewart, #3-Dillon, #1-McMurray, and #41-Busch.

Michigan adds more SAFER barrier: [Michigan International Speedway] added about 8,500 linear square feet of Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) Barrier for this weekend's racing. With adding the g-force reducing barrier to the outside front stretch and back stretch walls, MIS now has SAFER Barriers around the entire exterior of the racetrack. MIS also added SAFER Barrier on the inside wall going into Turn 1, on the inside wall exiting Turn 4 and on the inside wall of the front stretch on the other side of pit road facing the grass. "That certainly was a priority," Curtis said. "It pushed down a few other of our capital investment projects, but that's OK. Michigan not interested in hosting night races: While NASCAR tracks like Bristol and Daytona run night races, Michigan International Speedway president Roger Curtis says the track's future is still days. With this weekend's FireKeepers Casino 400 Sprint Cup race kicking off MIS' summer NASCAR doubleheader (the second race is in August), Curtis has ruled out any change soon to the traditional daytime format. As well as the huge expense of installing floodlights around the giant Irish Hills oval, Curtis believes Michigan fans prefer their racing during the day. Night racing, Curtis said, would create its own outbound traffic concerns. "We are not even remotely talking lights," Curtis said [Tuesday]. "There are so many other things we continue to build on out here like garages, restrooms and the Wi-Fi service. For example, erecting lights for a night race would cost around $17 million for the track and tram routes. We'd have to light two lanes out. Going east on U.S.-12 is curvy between here and Clinton. Firekeepers Casino to sponsor June Michigan race: Michigan International Speedway officials have partnered with FireKeepers Casino, another Michigan-based company, to bring fans the FireKeepers Casino 400 on June 12. FireKeepers Casino sponsored Pole Day for both NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at MIS in 2015. Company representatives saw first-hand how well their brand fit with NASCAR fans so it was only natural to increase its involvement in the series. FireKeepers Casino has found all its guests want an authentic experience and there's camaraderie among casino-goers. Last year they discovered NASCAR has that, too, as NASCAR fans share a very similar attribute - they all want to be a part of something big. Through state and local revenue sharing agreements, FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek, Michigan, has contributed more than $100 million to the state of Michigan and to a local Revenue Sharing Board since the casino opened in August of 2009. Safety improvements made at Michigan: Following a pre-race review of the facility by International Speedway Corporation and NASCAR, additional safety measures will be implemented prior to the August 14-16 NASCAR weekend. Approximately 150 feet of temporary wall will be added to the existing pit road tri-oval wall, extending toward Turn 4. Attenuators will be placed at the end of the extension on the wall. Additionally, safety enhancements announced in April have been completed including the addition of 700 linear feet of Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) to pit in and pit out walls, and the installation of tire pack barriers at the angled wall inside Turn 1. The infield at the exit of pit road was also paved to function as a skid pad and pace car vehicle entry and exit. Upon the conclusion of the August NASCAR weekend and installed in time for the 2016 racing season, Michigan International Speedway will again work with Cheaha Construction for the addition of 7,500 linear feet of SAFER to outside walls on the frontstretch and backstretch, as well as the pit tri-oval wall.(MIS)(8-10-2015)

Quicken Loans title sponsorship at Michigan unknown: Bill Emerson, the CEO of Quicken Loans, said Sunday that he was unaware of the length of the contract his company had to hold the naming rights for the June Sprint Cup race at MIS. "I don't know what the length of the term is, and we won't talk about [financial numbers]. But it's been a fantastic partnership," Emerson said. "As far as I know, we're continuing into the future with this relationship." Quicken Loans originally entered a one-year deal in the spring of 2012 to hold the naming rights of the June race at MIS, with an option to extend the agreement. Quicken Loans is also the title sponsor for the second-to-last Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway. MIS and Michigan state tourism and government officials announced in October of 2014 that the August Sprint Cup race at MIS will continue to be named the Pure Michigan 400.(Toledo Blade)(6-16-2015)

Atlanta removing 17,000 seats, Charlotte 41,000 UPDATE: Atlanta Motor Speedway's parent company, Speedway Motorsports, Inc., announced Tuesday that they will remove 17,000 seats from the track's grandstands. The company anticipates using those areas for premium hospitality, advertising and other facility purposes. UPDATE: Alterations announced this week are in line with a trend of tracks removing seats. Charlotte, after removing 41,000 seats this winter, will be down to permanent seating of 89,000 in 2015, a startlingly low capacity considering its location in NASCAR's epicenter. But it's par for the course. Atlanta is removing 17,000 seats to get down to 75,000; Dover is removing 17,500 seats to get down to 95,500; and Daytona is removing its backstretch grandstands of 46,500 next spring to go to 101,500 seats. Other tracks on the circuit have made similar changes.
At its peak in 2007, International Speedway Corp.'s 12 major tracks had 1.1 million grandstand seats (not including suites). After the Daytona renovation, ISC will be down 30 percent to approximately 761,000 seats.
In 2013 alone, the following ISC tracks cut seats: Talladega (from 108,000 to 78,000), Richmond (91,000 to 71,000), Chicagoland (69,000 to 55,500), Michigan (84,000 to 71,000), California (81,000 to 68,000), Darlington (60,000 to 58,000) and Homestead (56,000 to 46,000). Any additional cuts likely will be revealed when its annual report comes out in January.
With the current Charlotte and Atlanta reductions, Speedway Motorsports has cut 101,000 seats (12 percent) across seven of its tracks since 2009, although it added 38,000 at Kentucky when it moved a Cup race to that track. SMI, which includes suites in its capacity estimates, cut capacity in 2013 at Atlanta (from 98,000 to 92,000), Bristol (158,000 to 153,000) and New Hampshire (96,000 to 95,000).
Dover listed 135,000 seats in 2009, so its reduction in recent years is 29 percent. At one point, it reduced 20,000 seats by replacing the current seats with wider ones for more fan comfort, a move done by many racetracks. Indianapolis and Pocono, privately owned, do not have to report their capacities, but Indianapolis also has removed seats.(see full article at the Sporting News)(12-11-2014)

Michigan International Speedway, MEDC Pure Michigan 400 partnership extended: Two of Michigan's best-known brands - Michigan International Speedway and Pure Michigan - are extending their partnership to host the Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, August 16, 2015. Since 2011, the Pure Michigan 400 has proved to be an effective way to bring the Pure Michigan message to 75 million NASCAR fans nationwide. Further brand exposure has resulted from working with nationally recognized grand marshals, including Desmond Howard, Kid Rock, Carter Oosterhouse and Amy Smart and Olympic gold medalists Charlie White and Meryl Davis. Additionally, MEDC has been able to use the event to host business leaders and national site selectors to showcase the quality of life Michigan has to offer. Each year about 385,000 people visit MIS, generating an economic impact of more than $414 million. Nearly 60 percent of the guests on race weekends come from outside Michigan, making MIS the largest welcome center in the state. The partnership joining these two brands, both focused on attracting new visitors to Michigan, continues what is believed to be the first time a state's branding agency has sponsored NASCAR's premier stock car series. MIS removing turn 3 grandstands, seating capacity to shrink: The grandstands located at turn 3 at Michigan International Speedway are coming down. The decision to remove the section of bleachers stems from speedway administrators wanting to tighten up the seating area to keep fans closer to primary sightlines. "The stands at turn 3 are kind of out there by themselves," said Brad Kuhbander, MIS Manager of Media Relations. "This will help keep fans closer to the action and fan plaza and a better view of pit row. We're always looking for ways to enhance the fan experience, and this is just another step in that process." Removing the section of grandstands, which sit at the northeast corner of the track, will reduce seating capacity at MIS from 87,000 to 72,000. It is just the latest project that has dropped seating capacity at the speedway over the past decade. As recently as 2006, MIS could seat about 137,000 fans. Capacity shrunk to about 108,000 by 2011 and then to about 87,000 in 2012. The speedway does not release ticket sales or attendance totals for races. While the number of seats available will be fewer, ticket prices will remain the same, Kuhbander said. "We're not pricing anyone out, we're just moving them," Kuhbander said. Kuhbander said the speedway will keep all the materials from the grandstand for possible future use. Dates have already been determined for NASCAR's two Sprint Cup Series races at MIS in 2014. Manufacturer's Trophy will recognize winning automobile maker at MIS: Michigan International Speedway, the hometrack of auto manufacturers since 1968, announced today the creation of a Manufacturer's Trophy, an ode to the spirit of the automobile and its importance to the racetrack. Inspired by the Stanley Cup, the award will recognize the winning manufacturer - Ford, Toyota or Chevrolet - after each NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win at MIS. "MIS is important. It's important to all (the manufacturers)," track president Roger Curtis said. "Whether you're headquartered here or not, Toyota has a huge presence in this state with the Tech Center and employs a lot of people there. I thought it was very important that we do something to formally recognize almost in a rivalry standpoint the significance of MIS on the schedule for these guys." Each manufacturer and MIS also will donate $10,000 that will be given to a youth-related, STEM-related charity in Michigan. The trophy was designed by Fortress Studios artists Steven Kuypers and Steven McShane, both graduates of Detroit's College for Creative Studies. The trophy will be more than three feet tall, weigh about 50 pounds and feature sculpture similar to Greek goddess of victory Nike, also inspiration for classic cars hood ornaments from Cadillac, Rolls-Royce and Packard. The original bronze artwork will sit atop a base similar to architecture of Detroit landmarks such as the Fisher Building and Guardian Building. Curtis compared the trophy with the tradition-steeped Big Ten football rivalries that have produced such iconic prizes as the Old Oaken Bucket (Indiana vs. Purdue) and the Paul Bunyan Trophy (Michigan vs. Michigan State). The track annually recognizes NASCAR's manufacturers, asking fans in the grandstands to cheer on their favorite during a fun poll conducted over the PA during pre-race ceremonies. The Manufacturer's Trophy will be presented after every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan in June and August, starting with the Pure Michigan 400 on Aug. 18. The trophy is expected to renew a fun "rivalry" between the automakers. The trophy is unnamed. And Curtis has asked media to Tweet him name ideas at @MISRoger.
