  • Stewart honored with granite stone at New Hampshire: Dale Earnhardt has his rock and now Tony Stewart has his granite stone at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. A winner of five races in three different motorsports series at NHMS during his legendary career, Tony Stewart will now forever be honored for his achievements on the 1.058-mile oval. Speedway officials unveiled the 7,400-pound engraved granite block for this weekend's Bad Boy Off Road 300. Fans will be able to the see the granite stone, as it is positioned under the Main Grandstands in a manicured flowerbed next to the suite elevators parallel to the Granite Stripe start/finish line. The granite features Stewart's #14 in the top-left corner with his name underneath. The middle of the engraving is a likeness of Stewart's car the last time he won here in 2011. The bottom-right of the stone features the New Hampshire Motor Speedway logo with the year of each of his wins at NHMS - 1998 (IndyCar), 2000 (Cup Series), 2005 (Cup Series), 2008 (XFINITY Series) and 2011 (Cup Series).(NHMS)(9-24-2016)

  • NFL player Matt Light to drive pace car at New Hampshire: One of the greatest offensive linemen in New England Patriots history and a vital cog in helping the Pats to three Super Bowls, Matt Light will serve as the Official NASCAR Pace Car Driver for the Bad Boy Off Road 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday at 2:00pm. Light made the announcement alongside speedway officials and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at Thursday night's Patriots game at Gillette Stadium against the Houston Texans. Light, who retired in 2012, will lead the field to green in the second of three Round of 16 races in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. Light, 38, was a second-round pick of the New England Patriots in the 2001 NFL Draft. A left tackle on the offensive line - one of the most important positions on the field for right-handed quarterbacks - Light was instrumental in keeping Tom Brady's blindside protected for much of his career. In 2001, Light founded The Light Foundation, a non-profit organization that gives at-risk kids a better chance at leading healthy lives by using the great outdoors to learn and grow. Following his stellar career with the Pats, Light enjoyed a short stint as an analyst at ESPN. He now spends time working to grow the Light Foundation as well as running his various business ventures, including the launch of KEEL Vodka, a brand of light vodka that's taken off.(NHMS)(9-23-2016)

  • Bad Boy Off Road sponsoring New Hampshire race: Bold and ambitious. Those are the qualities needed for a driver to win a race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. So, it's fitting that a company with similar attributes will serve as the entitlement sponsor for one of the most demanding races of the season. Speedway officials announced that the second race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship on Sunday, Sept. 25 has been named the Bad Boy Off Road 300. The Bad Boy Off Road 300 will cap off a jam-packed weekend of NASCAR: New England Style racing and entertainment. Tripleheader Saturday will feature the Camping World Truck Series, Whelen Modified Tour and American-Canadian Tour, while Cheap Trick, a 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, will provide the Sunday pre-race show before the green flag drops on the Bad Boy Off Road 300 at 2:00pm. Bad Boy Off Road, a Textron Specialized Vehicles brand, is no stranger to NASCAR with its longtime partnerships in the industry, including being the primary sponsor for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase contender Kevin Harvick. Harvick won the September Chase race at NHMS in 2006 and will return a favorite for Sunday's race. Bad Boy Off Road caters to hunters, recreational riders, farmers and ranchers who typically see Bad Boy vehicles as a badge of honor for those that understand the power of the outdoor experience.(NHMS)(9-20-2016)

  • Speedway Motorsports Put Fans, Families First with $10 NASCAR Cup Series Kids' Tickets: In conjunction with a NASCAR industry-wide effort to offer free NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and XFINITY Series tickets for children 12 and under next season, Speedway Motorsports, Inc. announced a company-wide Fans First initiative Monday to price select children's tickets at just $10 each to Cup Series events at its eight premier speedways beginning in 2017. "Now a parent can get his or her child through the gates for an entire weekend of NASCAR events - including pole night, a Camping World Truck or XFINITY Series race and a Cup Series race - for just $10. This is one of the best, if not THE best, family values in all professional sports. NASCAR fans have passed down their passion for motorsports from generation to generation for decades, and through this new Fans First initiative, we'll continue that legacy by introducing young fans to the sport and engaging them for years to come." • New Hampshire names XFINITY race sponsor: Speed and efficiency, it's the quickest way around the track for a victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It's also two of the key features behind AutoLotto, a mobile app that allows people to buy and redeem lottery tickets from the convenience of their smartphones. Speedway officials announced that the mobile lottery company will sponsor the NASCAR XFINITY Series AutoLotto 200 at 4:00pm on Saturday, July 16. San Francisco-based AutoLotto launched this month in New Hampshire and allows users to purchase Powerball tickets from a mobile device. AutoLotto's "Tap. Tap. Ticket." approach to the lottery allows users to instantly order tickets without fees and record the ticket information on the mobile device, eliminating store lines, lost tickets and the need to track down results. AutoLotto checks the tickets for winning numbers and can even remember the user's favorite numbers, or automatically purchase tickets when the Powerball reaches a certain amount. The AutoLotto 200 will be the 30th running of a NASCAR XFINITY Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the longest running NASCAR event at the speedway. Since NASCAR's debut at the Magic Mile in 1990, the 200-lap Saturday feature has seen 25 different drivers go to Sunoco Victory Lane. Darrell Wallace Jr., who currently sits ninth in the NASCAR XFINITY Series standings and is looking for his first career win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, will have AutoLotto as his primary car sponsor for the race on July 16.(NHMS)(6-30-2016)

  • Eric Paslay concert to kick off New Hampshire Cup Race: Eric Paslay, a 2016 Grammy Award nominee, will headline the New Hampshire Motor Speedway frontstretch stage before the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, July 17. Paslay, who will take the stage at 10:45am, is part of a jam-packed weekend of racing and entertainment at the speedway. Speedway officials have created a special Eric Paslay ticket package giving fans the opportunity to win an exclusive meet and greet with the country singer prior to his 45 minute concert. EMI Records Nashville breakout country artist, Paslay is as a renowned, platinum-selling, hit songwriter and dynamic performer. The Texas-native earned his first Grammy nomination as an artist in 2016 for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for "The Driver" - a collaboration with friends Charles Kelley and Dierks Bentley. The Eric Paslay ticket package is now available and will include a Pre-Race Pit Pass and a general admission Laconia Grandstand ticket to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race for $120. A random drawing on July 8 will award two lucky winners and one guest with a private meet and greet with the country music singer on race morning.(NHMS)(6-20-2016)

  • Caroline Burns to sing National Anthem at New Hampshire: The last time Caroline Burns was at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, she was 13 years old, having won the opportunity to sing the national anthem before a Sprint Cup Series race thanks to her efforts in the Speedway Star singing competition. On July 17, Burns will return to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" before the New Hampshire 301 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race following an amazing run on NBC's popular singing contest "The Voice." Burns followed up her national anthem appearance at the speedway by attending the blind auditions for "The Voice" in 2015. Unfortunately, none of the four judges - Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton - turned their chairs around. It was both heartbreaking and a learning experience for Burns, who returned this season determined to get on the show. The hard work paid off, with Levine and Shelton both turning their chairs to vie as Burns's coach for the show. The decision, however, was an easy one, as Burns picked Levine to be her coach, guiding her all the way to Live Playoffs portion of the show. Burns is now home in Hollis, NH and is focusing on finishing school and beginning projects to write and compose her own music as she eyes a singing career.(NHMS)(5-13-2016)

  • Speedway Children's Charities Distributes Nearly $2.9 Million Nationwide: Speedway Children's Charities officials have announced that the nonprofit will distribute nearly $2.9 million in grants to more than 390 different charitable organizations across the country in 2015, bringing the total funds distributed since 1982 to more than $46 million.
"My parents started Speedway Children's Charities from modest beginnings with the goal of helping children in physical, financial, emotional and medical need," said Marcus Smith, vice chairman of Speedway Children's Charities. "From that first chapter at Charlotte Motor Speedway to now eight chapters at Speedway Motorsports' facilities nationwide, we've far surpassed their early expectations. But as long as there is a need, Speedway Children's Charities will continue working to improve the lives of children by supporting local nonprofits that help children in hundreds of local communities."
Funds distributed by Speedway Children's Charities chapters at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Sonoma Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway totaled $2,886,902 in 2015. Speedway Children's Charities raises grant money through various fundraising activities, including clay shoots, track events, auctions, holiday light displays and more.
"It was a banner year for Speedway Children's Charities, and we can't thank the race fans, sponsors, volunteers, team owners, drivers and staff enough for all of their efforts to help children in need," said Maj. Gen. Chuck Swannack, executive director of Speedway Children's Charities. "Every single dollar or volunteer hour makes a difference, and these fundraising results will have a true impact to help children in need of a brighter future." • New Hampshire considering lights; other uses for track: David McGrath is new at the top for New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but he already has four years of experience helping the track improve its performance in the Granite State. McGrath, 51, was named the speedway's executive vice president and general manager one month ago, replacing Jerry Gappens. Now he's in the corner office, leading the business that has become the state's preeminent sports and entertainment venue, and one of the top venues in New England. He's trying to find new ways of using the property. And he's thinking big.
He's building on many of Gappens' efforts to expand operations at the 1,200-acre facility. Among the ideas the speedway has been considering is the addition of lights above the 1.058-mile oval track, which is one of the more distinctive racing loops in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Lights, a multimillion-dollar investment, would allow night racing, something NASCAR fans have been asking for, McGrath said. It would need the approval of the town, and the track would seek the approval of area residents. Such a move would also require the approval of NASCAR "and our broadcasting partners," he said.
McGrath also wants to find new ways of using and selling the track, and for bringing more people there on a year-round basis. NHMS already offers numerous attractions besides its two Sprint Cup races, such as serving as host to the Daniel Webster Council's Boy Scout Jamboree in the fall and hosting high-profile motorcycle races during Motorcycle Week in the Granite State. He's considering hosting an Ironman Triathlon or a Tough Mudder mud run, the kinds of events that are held at other venues in the state during warmer months. Also receiving strong consideration is a return of snowmobile racing during winter months.
But most of his work revolves around the major NASCAR events, which fill the 88,000-seat grandstands in July and September each year. He hopes to bring new "decking space" for fans outside of the first two turns of the track.(New Hampshire Union Leader)(11-10-2015)

  • David McGrath replaces Jerry Gappens at New Hampshire: Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Marcus Smith has announced the promotion of David McGrath to the position of executive vice president and general manager at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. McGrath takes over the position previously held by Jerry Gappens, who has resigned. "During his time at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, David has shown tremendous leadership and great passion for his work," Smith said. "He has earned the respect of his peers across the company and has embraced opportunities to tackle new challenges. Under his direction, I am confident the future of New Hampshire Motor Speedway is in good hands." McGrath, 51, joined the speedway in November of 2011 as the director of advertising and promotions. He was voted by his peers as the speedway's Employee of the Year in 2012. McGrath was promoted to vice president of marketing and promotions in January of 2013 and then to vice president of corporate sales in January of 2014. Smith continued, "Jerry Gappens has been a significant part of our company's growth both at Charlotte Motor Speedway and in New Hampshire. We are appreciative for his 23 years of service and wish him the very best for the future." McGrath's background in motorsports includes serving as the marketing manager for the pro racing division of the Sports Car Club of America in Englewood, Co. At SCCA, McGrath was responsible for sponsor acquisition, contingency programs and marketing from the sponsorship side to a fan base of more than 55,000. Before joining the Magic Mile, McGrath worked for Comcast Spotlight, the local advertising sales division of Comcast Cable, for a period of 12 years. McGrath currently lives in Kennebunk, Maine, with his wife, Marybeth, and their two children Garrett, 18, and Samantha, 11.(NHMS)(10-5-2015)

  • New Hampshire Motor Speedway devalued by $100M since purchase: When Speedway Motorsports Inc. bought New Hampshire Motor Speedway in January 2008 for $340 million in cash, it was an indication of what a track that hosted NASCAR races was worth then. A little less than eight years later, despite increased television revenues, the track-operating company founded by Bruton Smith devalued the 1.058-mile racetrack by approximately $100 million as part of its 2015 second quarter financial report that was released Wednesday. "If we had to do it again, obviously we wouldn't pay quite so much," SMI chief financial officer Bill Brooks said in a conference call Wednesday with financial analysts. With the facility having two Sprint Cup dates and an avid fan base, SMI agreed to the deal in September 2007 just prior to the financial downturn. For comparison, it bought Kentucky Speedway, a 1.5-mile facility with no Sprint Cup dates at the time, for $78.3 million in December 2008. Brooks said of the $340 million purchase price for the New Hampshire track, approximately $300 million was for the two Sprint Cup race weekends the facility had at the time. He said the approximate $100 million devaluation of the facility relates to the worth of the events to the track.
The seating capacity at New Hampshire was recently reduced from 95,000 to 88,000. SMI reported Wednesday that the track has had ongoing lower-than-anticipated revenues for its major racing events, and its chance to recoup those revenues were limited "similar to challenges faced by many major sports" of increased entertainment options and more people preferring to watch the events at home. SMI recorded a non-cash charge of $98.9 million on its latest financial statement for the devaluation of New Hampshire and change in goodwill resulting from NASCAR's transition to selling merchandise from a centrally located tent and not primarily through haulers and kiosks at the track. SMI will get an income tax benefit of $38.4 million as a result of the write-down.
The operator of eight tracks that have Sprint Cup races (Atlanta, Bristol, Charlotte, Kentucky, Las Vegas, New Hampshire, Sonoma and Texas), SMI reported that ticket revenue was down 3.2 percent through June but that includes a weather-plagued Atlanta weekend in February -- its 2014 event was in August -- and does not include Kentucky, which last year had its race in June but this year was in July. Brooks said many of the 2015 race weekends are showing increased revenues over 2014.(ESPN) and see the full report at Speedway Motorsports Inc. - 2015 second quarter financial report.(7-29-2015)

  • New Hampshire Motor Speedway touts viability of casino site in Loudon: Ahead of a House vote on a bill allowing two casinos in the state, the New Hampshire Motor Speedway has ramped up lobbying efforts to drive home the point: They would make a fine site for a casino. General Manager Jerry Gappens hosted a breakfast Tuesday at the Holiday Inn in Concord and talked about the site's potential use as a state fairgrounds, the proposed 20,000-square-foot Northeast Motor Sports Museum and infrastructure improvements to Route 106. He also reiterated his support for the two-casino legislation that passed the Senate in March and now faces an uncertain future in the House. Gappens will testify Thursday in support of the bill in front of the House Ways and Means Committee, he said. "If it's going to come, this would be a site that should be on the most desirable list," Gappens said in an interview Wednesday. "I'm a pro-speedway guy, and I'm bullish on this location. I think the Route 106 corridor has so much economic growth potential. It would be a good thing to bring in additional tax revenue and jobs to the area." Sen. Lou D'Allesandro, the Manchester Democrat who sponsored the legislation, said Thursday that while it's too early to discuss the viability of potential sites, he has heard chatter about possible locations. "Have people mentioned sites? Yes, they have. Heck, it's a bidding situation," D'Allesandro said. If the bill is passed into law, the process to apply for a license would be open and competitive, he added. A casino at the site could bridge the race season and the off-season between late October and April, Gappens said. The speedway is well-positioned for a casino license because of its location between the Lakes Region and cities such as Manchester and Concord. There are 18 million people within 200 miles of the speedway, and those who want to gamble visit casinos in Maine and Connecticut, Gappens said. Two out-of-state casinos are spending $100,000 for advertising at the speedway, and though the revenue is welcome, the advertisements essentially ask people to leave New Hampshire.(in part from the Concord Monitor)(4-9-2014)

  • NHMS, Toyota Renew Partnership: If there's a company that knows how to "win on Sunday and sell on Monday" at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, it's Toyota. Speedway officials announced recently that it has renewed its relationship with the popular manufacturer, retaining Toyota as the speedway's "official vehicle" through 2016. Toyota has been the speedway's partner since 2011, and has enjoyed tremendous success both on the track and throughout the Boston region marketplace. Drivers have piloted Toyota Camrys into victory lane in three straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races dating back to 2012, while the manufacturer continues to be a leader in American automotive production, maintaining 10 manufacturing plants throughout the United States. Last year, Toyota used the Magic Mile as its host site to launch the new redesigned 2014 Tundra with local New England dealerships. The agreement provides Toyota with the ability to use the track for annual events, new product launches, owner's events and other activities throughout the year. In addition, Toyota vehicles will be used as the "official" pace vehicle for all speedway events, including the Camping World RV Sales 301 (July 10-13) and OSRAM SYLVANIA 300 (Sept. 18-21) NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekends. For more details and ticket information on events at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, or to purchase tickets to the July Camping World RV Sales 301 or September OSRAM SYLVANIA 300 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekends, please stop by our Ticket Office, visit the speedway website at www.nhms.com, or call our Ticket Hotline at (603) 783-4931.(NHMS)(3-10-2014)
