Opening Day

Do you know that feeling you get when you're really excited? Whether it's your birthday, a holiday or seeing some relatives who live far away, you can hardly sit still as you count down the days.

Well, that's how a lot of sports fans feel in the weeks leading up to the first baseball games of the year. For baseball fans, Opening Day is like a holiday. It's the start of a brand new season. On Opening Day, every team has the same record, 0-0. It is the one day of the year when every team is in first place!

Baseball teams make Opening Day a festive event. A celebrity or special guest will throw out the first pitch and sometimes loud jets fly over the stadium. Fans fill every seat in the stadium, which is decorated with red, white and blue flags. The best pitchers on every team take the mound on Opening Day, so the fans are treated to very good baseball games.

Every baseball season starts with a lot of questions. Who will win the World Series? Who will hit the most home runs? Which pitcher will be the best? Opening Day is a chance to talk to other fans about what might happen during the season. There is a lot of anticipation because nobody knows just how the season will unfold. It's like the first day of vacation. You don't know exactly what will happen, but you know your trip is going to be good and that you're going to have fun!

One of the best parts about Opening Day is that it means spring is here. After a long winter, the crack of the bat brings everybody back outside. Once again, fans can sit in the sunshine and watch their favorite teams. On Opening Day, when the umpire yells "Play Ball," you know it won't be long until summertime arrives.
