Don't Ever Give Up

On Tuesday night, four big-name college basketball teams played two games in New York City. The crowds were large and the competition was fierce. But the evening wasn't about the players or even the final scores. It was about honoring the legacy of a truly great coach.

Jimmy V: In 1983, North Carolina State scored a wild upset victory over the powerful University of Houston to win the NCAA championship. There is a famous shot of NC State's ecstatic coach, Jim Valvano, running wildly around the court, almost unable to believe what his team had just accomplished. It was one of the greatest upsets in sports history. One of the reasons why NC State was able to achieve this victory is that Coach Valvano taught his players to believe in themselves and never give up hope.

Legacy: Sadly, Valvano passed away in 1993, just 10 years after he led his team to the NCAA Championship. But players, coaches and fans around the country will always remember his message. In a speech he made in 1993, Valvano used the famous line: "Don't give up; don't ever give up." This phrase has become a rallying cry not just in sports, but in life. It's a message that reminds people that through hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.

The Jimmy V Classic: Tuesday night's games at Madison Square Garden were part of the Jimmy V Classic, an annual event that honors Valvano and raises money for the Jimmy V Foundation. Since 1995, four of the nation's best college hoops teams participate in the event. It's a night that is not just about great basketball, but about the teachings of a great coach.
