Turning the Tables

Teams have good years and they have bad years. It's a fact of life in sports. A team can't win a championship every year, and it also can't finish in last place every year. It's one of the reasons why we follow sports - before the season starts; you never know what is going to happen.

Women's Hoops: A few weeks into the women's college basketball season, some teams have jumped to the front of the pack. Among those tops teams are some of the usual suspects: Connecticut, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Stanford and Duke. These are the teams that more often than not put together good seasons. But there are also some surprising teams in the mix, schools that were expected to lose more than they won.

St. Bonaventure: One of the most surprising teams in women's college basketball is St. Bonaventure, a small school located in western New York State. A few years ago, the Bonnies weren't winning many games. This year, though, St. Bonaventure is off to a 10-0 start and is inching towards a spot in the nation's Top 25.

Turning It Around: In order to turn a program around, it takes a lot patience and even more hard work. Players, coaches and fans have to realize that a transformation won't happen overnight. It can take years to develop a winning tradition. In the middle part of this decade, the Bonnies only won nine games for three seasons in a row. Since then they have steadily improved and are now experiencing their finest season ever. The coaching staff worked passionately to make the program attractive to talented players, who in turn helped the team win more games. Once the Bonnies started winning, more players became interested in playing for the team.

No matter which team you cheer for, there are going to be some tough years. Your team might lose some heart-breaking games, which is frustrating. But rest assured that if coaches, players and fans remain committed to the team, things will eventually turn around. Just look at the Bonnies.
