From the Hardwood to the Gridiron

A college football team is trying an experiment. The team plans on using a point guard for a quarterback. Sound funny? Well, it's true! This season the Syracuse University Orangemen are trying out a new quarterback named Greg Paulus. You may recognize the name- Greg was a standout on the Duke University basketball team! The interesting thing is that Greg Paulus has not played in a football game in over four years.

Greg grew up in Syracuse, New York in a big family that loves to play sports together. Greg was a star athlete in high school and was extremely dedicated to two different sports: football AND basketball. His hard work was recognized in 2005 when he was named the best high school football player in the country and New York's Mr. Basketball.

Everyone thought Greg would go to college and be a football quarterback, but he surprised a lot of people when he committed to playing basketball at Duke University. Some people thought he was making a mistake, but Greg wanted to focus on being the best he could be at basketball and as a student. During his four years playing point guard at Duke he was known as a fierce competitor who never gave up.

After he graduated from Duke, several schools asked Greg if he wanted to use his last year of eligibility to try football again. Always a dedicated, hard-working athlete, he still had a desire to compete and wanted to challenge himself to try and succeed.

Greg will be in graduate school at Syracuse this fall, where he will be back on the football field for the first time since high school. Greg knows that this won't be easy. I think his belief in hard work and his competitive nature will really help him. He is very excited about this opportunity. People are once again questioning his decision but he plans to prove them wrong. This is his chance to come home and try to make a difference. I wish him the best of luck.
