2020 SCSM: A brand new virtual experience awaits

Since 2012, the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) has been renowned as a gold standard marathon on the global running calendar. And this year, in spite of the challenges posed by Covid-19, will be no different.

Traditionally held during the first weekend of December, the world-class race will take place over an extended period from Friday November 27 to Sunday December 6. Iconic race route? Check. Signature finisher experience? Check. Overseas participants? Warmly welcomed!

Prioritising the health and safety of participants, event organisers IRONMAN Group have created a unique hybrid race format that mixes both virtual and physical components, complete with the much-treasured finisher photo at Gardens by The Bay

Race as one with the global running community

The Grand Finale, which caps off the 13-week-long SCSM Virtual Racing series, offers five exciting race categories in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) formats, with prizes for top finishers. Free-of-charge to join, participants can choose to purchase a race bundle featuring exclusive memorabilia including the official SCSM 2020 runner singlet, backpack, drink bottle, medal, finisher photo, and downloadable e-bib and finisher certificate.

Runners will be able to traverse Singapore’s spectacular cityscape no matter where in the world they reside, thanks to the Rouvy virtual race platform. The immersive AR race routes offer a tour of Singapore’s iconic areas as well as hidden gems, including the glitzy Orchard Road shopping strip, historic Civic District, mesmerising Marina Bay area, adrenaline-filled Singapore Sports Hub, and the eclectic enclaves of Little India and Chinatown. Create an avatar and navigate the route in real time, rubbing virtual elbows with fellow competitors.

For participants in Singapore, a signature SCSM post-race party awaits. The Grand Finale Celebration at the Flower Field Hall at Gardens by the Bay on 5-6 December — specially for runners who have purchased the race bundle — will feature finisher photo snaps and collection of race entitlements, all under safe event management guidelines. Overseas runners will get their bundle posted to them.

Wrapping up the entire weeks-long SCSM 2020 experience will be a special 90-minute live Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2020 Race As One Show on Dec 5 at 6pm. Tune in via the SCSM Facebook page and catch celebrities and personalities race for a cause in the Rouvy AR Half Marathon Relay Challenge, while raising funds for Community Chest.

More than just a race: engaging with runners via the SCSM Virtual Club

The SCSM has been recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) as a Gold Label race since 2012, putting it in the esteemed company of the Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon. Out of an annual average of 50,000 runners in recent years, up to 20 per cent are foreign runners and the figure is steadily growing.

To help participants all over the world train for the SCSM and to forge a unique global running community, two innovative initiatives, the SCSM Virtual Club and SCSM Virtual Racing Series, were launched in August, with over 80,000 participation logged across the weekly virtual races and challenges. Virtual club members have also had the opportunity to tap into a wealth of training resources via SCSM+, and earn points and redeem rewards such as exclusive race merchandise.

Two new virtual races are made available each week, celebrating running routes unique to Singapore and structured according to four passion themes: Action Seekers, Culture Shapers, Explorers and Foodies. These routes have been providing runners a chance to explore and rediscover different sides of Singapore and its hidden gems.

Set yourself up for a personal best at SCSM 2020

Ben Pulham of Coached, the official training partner of SCSM 2019, says the advantage of a virtual race over a traditional one is that a lot of things that are usually out of runners’ control are now in control.

“Without the hype on the morning of the race, you are able to start the race in a more calm state. You won’t have to weave through any crowds or get stuck at any bottlenecks. You’re in control of your fuelling — you can choose what drinks and gels you want to use and the frequency of your ‘aid breaks’,” says Pulham.

“When carefully considered, you can structure things to support running your best race and achieving your best possible time. I would personally invite a small group of people to join me in the last few kilometres or at the finish line to celebrate my achievement. Just because there is no finishing arch, does not mean it has to be any less special.”
